Time: 10am to 2pm Technician - Fire Alarm & Detection Systems
Position Title: Fire Alarm Systems Technician
Department: Maintenance / Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor or HSE Manager
Objective:
To ensure the continuous operational readiness, accuracy, and compliance of fire alarm, detection, and emergency notification systems through expert installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and precise documentation as per NFPA 72 and local Civil Defense codes.
Key Responsibilities:
Maintenance & Testing:

  • Execute scheduled preventive maintenance and inspection of all fire alarm system components.
  • Conduct functional tests on:
  • Fire Alarm Control Panels (FACP) and their programming.
  • Initiating devices: smoke detectors, heat detectors, beam detectors, duct detectors, and manual call points.
  • Notification appliances: alarm sounders, strobes, voice evacuation systems, and public address interfaces.
  • System interfaces with HVAC, elevator recall, door holders, and other building systems.
System Monitoring & Power:
  • Inspect, test, and maintain Central Battery Systems (CBS) / Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) for fire panels and emergency lighting.
  • Perform battery load tests, check chargers, and maintain battery banks.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot addressable and conventional loop wiring for faults (open, short, ground).
Corrective Action & Repairs:
  • Diagnose system faults, troubleshoot wiring issues, and replace defective devices or modules.
  • Respond to and resolve emergency service calls, including nuisance alarm investigations.
  • Perform minor programming changes (e.g., device labeling, sensitivity testing) as permitted.
  • Coordinate with system vendors for major software updates or panel replacements.
Compliance & Documentation:
  • Maintain meticulous logs of all tests, inspections, faults, and corrective actions.
  • Complete comprehensive test reports as mandated by NFPA 72 and local authorities for annual certification.
  • Ensure system configuration and sensitivity settings comply with the latest standards.
  • Update system "as-built" drawings and device inventories after any changes.
General Duties:
  • Provide training to building staff on basic system operation and alarm response procedures.
  • Stay current with evolving fire alarm technologies, codes (NFPA 72), and networking protocols.
  • Assist in the commissioning of new systems or expansion of existing ones.
Qualifications & Requirements:
  • Diploma in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent technical certification.
  • Proven experience (2-5 years) as a Fire Alarm Technician.
  • Strong knowledge of analog/addressable fire alarm systems (e.g., Notifier, Siemens, Edwards, Bosch).
  • Proficiency in using multimeters, meggers, and fire alarm diagnostic software.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, riser diagrams, and network layouts.
  • Understanding of low-voltage circuits, NAC circuits, and SLC loops.
  • Certification from local Civil Defense authorities and/or NICET certification (highly preferred).
