Plumber
Job Title: Plumber
Reports To: Master Plumber, Project Manager, or Business Owner
Occupation Summary: A Plumber installs, repairs, and maintains pipes, fixtures, and other plumbing equipment used for water distribution, drainage, and waste disposal in residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. They ensure systems comply with safety standards and building codes.
Key Responsibilities
Installation:

  • Assemble, install, and repair water supply lines, drainage systems, and related fixtures (e.g., sinks, toilets, tubs, water heaters, dishwashers) according to blueprints and plumbing codes.
  • Install gas lines for appliances like stoves, dryers, and furnaces (requires additional certification in many areas).
  • Layout pipe systems using techniques such as welding, soldering, threading, and solvent welding.
Maintenance & Inspection:
  • Perform routine inspections of plumbing systems to identify potential issues like leaks, corrosion, or blockages.
  • Maintain septic systems and sump pumps.
  • Flush water heaters and clean drains to prevent problems.
Repair & Troubleshooting:
  • Locate and repair leaks, clogs, and other damages in water and drainage lines.
  • Troubleshoot and repair malfunctioning fixtures and appliances.
  • Clear obstructions from drains and toilets using tools like plungers, drain snakes, and hydro-jetting equipment.
  • Repair or replace broken pipes using appropriate techniques.
Emergency Service:
  • Respond to emergency calls for issues like burst pipes, severe clogs, or gas leaks, which may require working outside normal business hours.
Customer Service & Compliance:
  • Interact with customers to understand problems, explain necessary work, and provide cost estimates.
  • Ensure all work complies with local, state, and national plumbing codes and regulations.
  • Obtain necessary permits for installations and major repairs.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of a 4-5 year apprenticeship program is standard.
  • Licensure: A Journeyman or Master Plumber license is required in most states and municipalities. The requirements vary but typically involve passing an exam.
  • Experience: Significant on-the-job training through an apprenticeship program.
  • Technical Skills:
  • Comprehensive knowledge of plumbing systems, codes, and safety practices.
  • Proficiency with plumbing tools including pipe wrenches, soldering torches, threaders, and drain inspection cameras.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and architectural drawings.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to lift heavy materials, work in awkward positions, and stand for long periods. Good manual dexterity.
  • Soft Skills: Excellent problem-solving abilities, strong communication skills, and a focus on safety and quality. Must be reliable and trustworthy.
