Head Waiter
Job Overview:
The Head Waiter is a pivotal front-of-house leadership role, acting as the bridge between the restaurant management and the service staff. This individual is responsible for the seamless execution of service, maintaining the highest standards of guest satisfaction, and leading the service team by example. They are the "conductor of the orchestra" during service, ensuring all elements harmonize to create a perfect dining experience.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Team Leadership & Supervision:
  • Organize and delegate tasks to waiters, junior waiters, and support staff before, during, and after service.
  • Conduct pre-service briefings to communicate daily specials, menu changes, reservations, and VIP guests.
  • Monitor team performance, provide real-time coaching, and report any issues to the Restaurant Manager.
  • Assist in training new hires on service standards, menu knowledge, and point-of-sale (POS) systems.
  • Guest Experience Management:
  • Greet guests upon arrival, exuding warmth and professionalism.
  • Oversee the entire dining room, anticipating guest needs and proactively addressing any issues before they escalate.
  • Personally handle VIP tables and any complex guest complaints, resolving them diplomatically and effectively.
  • Ensure all guests receive a consistent, high-quality, and memorable experience.
  • Service Coordination & Operations:
  • Manage table turnover and the seating plan in coordination with the host/hostess, optimizing the flow of service.
  • Coordinate closely with the kitchen (Chef de Partie/Sous Chef) to monitor order progress and ensure timely food delivery.
  • Oversee the pacing of courses, ensuring they are delivered smoothly and without unnecessary delays.
  • Have an expert-level knowledge of the entire menu, including ingredients, preparation methods, and wine pairings.
  • Administrative Duties:
  • May be responsible for processing end-of-shift reports, reconciling cash and credit card transactions, and managing server check-outs.
  • Monitor and manage inventory of front-of-house supplies, such as linens, menus, and stationery.
  • Provide constructive feedback to management on staff performance, customer feedback, and operational inefficiencies.
Qualifications & Skills:
  • Proven experience as a Waiter/Waitress or Senior Waiter in an upscale dining environment.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Impeccable personal presentation and professional demeanor.
  • Ability to remain calm, organized, and decisive under pressure.
  • In-depth knowledge of food, wine, and service techniques.
  • Proficiency with restaurant POS systems and reservation software.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a guest-centric mindset.
