Senior Director People Engagement

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Job Description

At Careem we are led by a powerful purpose to simplify and improve lives in the Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan. We're pioneering the development of innovative services to aid the mobility of people, the mobility of things and the mobility of money.

We're in the driving seat as we help to define how technology will shape progress in some of the fastest-growing countries in the world. Our teams are building tech to meet the needs of the future in areas including data and AI, e-commerce, technology-enabled logistics, maps, identity, and fintech.

We're well placed to solve complex and meaningful challenges at scale, with deep tech expertise, strong regulatory relationships, a local presence, and increasingly specialised global teams which are structured to operate as autonomous start-ups. Our team of over 400 engineers and developers are empowered to develop cutting-edge technology every day.

Careem was established in July 2012, became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Uber Technologies, Inc. in January 2020, and today operates in over 100 cities across 12 countries.

What you'll do

This is a high impact role, leading our team of People Engagement Directors and Partners as they drive people engagement and culture amongst our diverse group of colleagues across markets, verticals and functions within Careem.

Your primary responsibility will be to ensure cohesive implementation of the People Team strategy across all of our business lines, geographies and enabling functions. Having developed a deep understanding of our company strategy and goals, you will support the Chief People Officer (CPO) to craft objectives and goals for the Engagement team which you will then be responsible for driving.

Working with our Centers of Excellence you will translate centralized, cross functional projects into actionable deliverables within our business units - supporting both our business leaders as well as our engagement teams to implement plans. In addition, you will hold the pen on colleague engagement across the organization, ensuring that the appropriate analysis and plans are shared with the relevant teams to either maintain or drive high levels of colleague engagement overall.

You will adopt a servant leadership approach to enabling your team to work autonomously, and with their respective business counterparts to ensure teams at Careem have the right people and org frameworks to be successful. Key to success will be to define the role and remit of our PED's and PEP's and to ensure they have the right functional skills and values aligned competency, to work as a high performing unit.

  • Monitor and assess overall colleague engagement - leading a team of PED's and PEP's to manage and improve critical engagement drivers within their specific business units.
  • Work with our CoE teams to ensure that through our PED cohort we are providing fit for purpose frameworks to address:
  • Colleague growth, learning and development
  • Business and colleague performance management
  • Strategic workforce planning
  • Values and culture alignment in the context of our remote first ways of working
  • Reward and recognition opportunities
  • Act in a senior advisory capacity to our executive teams (G-Team and M-Team) when needed
  • Identify opportunities for our organization to work collaboratively and effectively based on your deep understanding of the business need/proximity to internal customer
  • Lead your team by setting ambitious goals and clear direction with a well defined work methodology, using our framework of continuous feedback and performance management to support your team in meeting their goals and objectives
  • Work closely with our internal communications team and CoE's to ensure our purpose and our CVP are embedded in our language and accessible to colleagues
  • Monitor and proactively identify opportunities to drive high levels of colleague retention and apply rigour to our talent acquisition processes
  • Embody our values by being of service, shooting to the moon and taking ownership as well as acting as a role model to the rest of the team on values aligned behaviours
What you'll need
  • Bachelor degree in HR Management, Organizational Psychology with a Masters /MBA preferred. CIPD or GPHR certification preferred
  • 12+ years of experience in an HR generalist leadership role, preferably in a high tech environment
  • Experience working with global teams, and driving organizational change initiatives and developing talent management plans for a global organization
  • High levels of resourcefulness, influence/organizational savvy, execution skills (strategy through implementation) as well as executive presence/impact
  • Strong business acumen and ability to work well across different functions in order to integrate People and business strategies
Where you'll be
  • Even though we are working remotely, we are strong believers in collaboration and the power of building social connections with our teams. For that reason, our offices are still open and provide plenty of collaboration-friendly spaces at times when teams need it or if you need a quiet space to work outside of home.
  • You'll be working out of the Careem Head Office in Dubai, UAE. Due to legal and compensation considerations, you will need to be based out of the country you're hired from as your primary work location.
What we'll provide you

In addition to a competitive long-term total compensation with salary and equity, we have a reward philosophy that expands beyond this. As a Careem colleague you will be able to:
  • Be part of a Remote-First organisation
  • Work from any country in the world for 60 days a year
  • Use Unlimited Vacation days throughout the year
  • Access fitness reimbursements for health activities including: gym, health club and training classes.
