Radio Operator
Job Title: Radio Operator (or Communications Operator)
Reporting To: Offshore Installation Manager (OIM)
Location: Offshore Drilling Rig (Radio Room / Control Room)
Rotation: Typically 14/21 days on, 14/21 days off
1. Overview:
The Radio Operator is the central hub for all external and internal communications on the rig. This role is critical for coordinating logistics, ensuring safety, and maintaining contact with onshore management, supply vessels, aircraft, and other offshore installations. On many modern rigs, this role may be combined with other duties, such as data entry or assisting the barge engineer.
2. Key Responsibilities:

  • Communication Hub: Operates and monitors all communication systems, including VHF, UHF, and HF radios, satellite communications (phone, fax, email), and public address (PA) systems.
  • Traffic Coordination: Acts as the primary point of contact for helicopter and supply vessel movements, coordinating arrivals, departures, and logistics.
  • Emergency Communications: Serves as the key communication link during emergencies, relaying messages to onshore support, other vessels, and coordinating with emergency services. Operates the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) equipment.
  • Record Keeping: Maintains a detailed log of all incoming and outgoing communications, including weather reports, personnel movements, and operational updates.
  • Weather Monitoring: Receives and distributes weather forecasts and storm warnings to the OIM and other key personnel.
  • System Maintenance: Performs basic checks and maintenance on communication equipment and reports any faults to onshore IT/communications support.
  • Administrative Support: Often handles administrative tasks such as managing crew changes, processing timesheets, and distributing incoming mail and messages.
3. Qualifications & Skills:
  • Certification: A valid GMDSS Radio Operator's license or equivalent is typically mandatory. An FCC license or other national certification may be required.
  • Experience: Previous experience as a radio operator, preferably in a maritime or offshore environment.
  • Communication Skills: Impeccable verbal and written communication skills, with a clear and professional demeanor.
  • Calm Under Pressure: Ability to remain calm, focused, and efficient during high-stress situations and emergencies.
  • Organizational Skills: Highly organized with excellent record-keeping abilities.
  • Technical Proficiency: Good understanding of various radio and satellite communication systems.
