Position Summary
Marriott International operates and franchises hotels and licenses vacation ownership resorts and branded residential properties globally. Marriott\xe2\x80\x99s Law Department provides legal support, advice and counsel to Marriott\xe2\x80\x99s various business units. The Junior Compliance Counsel will be a member of Marriott\xe2\x80\x99s EMEA Law Department, and will also work closely with Marriott\xe2\x80\x99s Global Compliance team based at Marriott\xe2\x80\x99s corporate headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. This role will help support Marriott\xe2\x80\x99s culture of compliance and integrity by providing legal support for the Company\xe2\x80\x99s Ethics and Global Compliance program in EMEA, including crucial risk areas such as:
  • Anti-corruption and anti-bribery, including the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), the UK Bribery Act, and local anticorruption laws;
  • Economic and trade sanctions, including sanctions administered by the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the EU, and the UK;
  • Antitrust and competition law;
  • Anti-money laundering;
  • Ethics and Code of Conduct (Marriott\xe2\x80\x99s Business Conduct Guide);
  • Whistleblower hotline (Marriott\xe2\x80\x99s Business Integrity Line) and related investigations;
  • Owner and franchisee due diligence; and
  • Other critical areas as designated by the EMEA VP & Senior Counsel for Compliance & Privacy, EMEA Chief Legal Counsel, General Counsel or the Global Compliance Counsel.
The Junior Compliance Counsel will report to and directly support the Vice President & Senior Counsel, EMEA Compliance & Privacy. This role will be based in Dubai. Specific Job Duties, Responsibilities, and Expected Contributions The Junior Compliance Counsel will have the following primary responsibilities:
  • Help support Marriott\xe2\x80\x99s anti-corruption and anti-bribery compliance program, with a focus on the US FCPA, UK Bribery Act, and local anti-corruption laws;
  • Help support Marriott\xe2\x80\x99s sanctions compliance program;
  • Help support Marriott\xe2\x80\x99s antitrust and competition law compliance program;
  • Help support Marriott\xe2\x80\x99s anti-money laundering program;
  • Help support the overall Ethics & Global Compliance program by identifying ethics and legal compliance issues of material concern in EMEA and work with EMEA and HQ leadership to identify appropriate direction and courses of action;
  • Develop, draft, and maintain policies, standards and procedures in the key risk areas and work cross-functionally with stakeholders to integrate these policy requirements into EMEA operations;
  • Conduct and participate in ethics and legal compliance risk assessments and develop risk mitigation strategies;
  • Provide legal advice and guidance to internal stakeholders related to compliance matters;
  • Make presentations and conduct training on ethics and legal compliance topics, including virtual and in-person compliance trainings throughout EMEA, and particularly in high-risk compliance jurisdictions in MEA;
  • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of compliance activities;
  • Work closely with Internal Investigations, Finance and Internal Controls, HR, and other stakeholders to appropriately scope and guide internal investigations related to potential compliance issues, including related to issues raised through the Business Integrity Line;
  • Work closely with EMEA Development and Asset Management teams to review, assess, and provide guidance on owner/franchisee due diligence;
  • Monitor current and evolving statutes, regulations, and case law and help to identify and respond to urgent legal issues of critical importance in a global business environment; interpret regulations and case law and translate regulations in business terms for stakeholders;
  • Respond to government investigations or queries as appropriate and/or required; and
  • Maintain strong coordination, cooperation and mutual support between the Law Department and Internal Audit, Finance, Internal Investigations, Government Affairs, Human Resources, and the EMEA Legal Ethics and Compliance Council.
Candidate Profile Successful candidates should possess most of the following experience, knowledge, and skills:
  • Excellent academic record and at least 4-6 years in a well-regarded law firm or comparable corporate environment, preferably with a focus on anti-corruption issues and with experience in investigations and interacting with government regulators. Experience with antitrust/competition law issues also a plus;
  • If licensed in the United States, active US Bar membership is required, otherwise, a practicing certificate from an appropriate jurisdiction is required;
  • Experience interfacing with government agencies having jurisdiction over compliance risk areas;
  • Experience providing advice and counsel on compliance matters;
  • Highly collaborative team player who values teammates;
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and resources with a sense of urgency and to navigate within a complex organization in a deadline-driven environment;
  • Flexibility and adaptability in addressing issues as they arise across multiple jurisdictions and time zones, including sensitivity to potential local business and cultural differences;
  • Independent and creative thinker who can thrive in a diverse and collaborative organization and lead projects that require building consensus and driving execution;
  • Ability to expeditiously identify and analyze issues and provide legally sound recommendations consistent with good business practices;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to interact effectively and work diplomatically with individuals at all levels;
  • Ability to foster relationships across the organization;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills (Powerpoint skills a plus);
  • Proven contract drafting and negotiating skills;
  • Excellent conflict management skills and ability to influence without coercion;
  • Ability to balance priorities, work activities, and resources for the benefit of multiple key stakeholders;
  • Ability to identify opportunities for improvement and facilitate the implementation of creative solutions;
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of and effectively solve problems; and
  • Available for business travel.
