Position Summary
The Heavy Bus Driver is responsible for the safe and timely transportation of passengers to and from designated locations. This role requires exceptional driving skills, a strong focus on safety, excellent customer service, and adherence to strict schedules. The driver will operate large buses (typically over 26,000 lbs. GVWR or designed to carry 16+ passengers) and is accountable for the well-being of passengers and the vehicle.
Key Responsibilities
Primary Duties:

• Operate a heavy bus in a safe, efficient, and lawful manner.
• Transport passengers along designated routes according to a precise schedule.
• Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure mechanical soundness (checking brakes, tires, lights, oil, fuel, etc.).
• Report any mechanical issues, accidents, or traffic violations to dispatch immediately.
• Obey all traffic laws and regulations and maintain a clean driving record.
• Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking, including those with disabilities or special needs (e.g., operating wheelchair lifts and securing mobility devices).
• Collect fares, issue transfers, and verify passes as required.

Customer Service & Safety:

• Provide a professional and courteous demeanor to all passengers.
• Announce stops and provide destination information clearly.
• Enforce safety rules and regulations on the bus.
• Maintain order and manage passenger conduct to ensure a safe environment.
• Administer basic first aid in case of emergency and follow emergency procedures.
• Secure the vehicle after completion of route.

Administrative:

• Complete daily logs, mileage reports, and passenger count records accurately.
• Manage fare collection and reconciliation if applicable.

Qualifications and Requirements
Mandatory:

• Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a Passenger (P) endorsement.
• School Bus (S) endorsement is required for school bus drivers.
• An impeccable driving record meeting company and DOT standards.
• Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening and background check.
• High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
• Ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical exam.

Experience:

• Proven experience as a bus driver or commercial driver is highly preferred.
• New CDL holders with certified training will be considered.

• Navigation: Proficiency using GPS devices and reading maps to navigate routes.
• Problem-Solving: Ability to handle unexpected situations, such as detours, mechanical problems, or passenger incidents, calmly and effectively.

Working Conditions

• Schedule: Shifts may include early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays. Overtime may be required.
• Environment: Work is performed primarily in the driver's cabin of a bus. Exposure to various weather conditions and traffic is constant.
• Physical Demand: Long periods of sitting and concentration are required. Must be able to handle the physical demands of assisting passengers and inspecting the vehicle.
