Job Summary:
The Director, Exhibition Design and Production is responsible for designing and coordinating design for all Academy Museum exhibitions and projects and reports to the Managing Director, Creative Content and Programming. The incumbent is responsible for developing the exhibition design for the museum's temporary exhibitions and projects and for working closely with the external exhibition designers contracted for the opening long-term exhibitions at the museum, as well as for other design needs for the new and renovated buildings. Working closely with exhibit staff production and AV managers, ensure all exhibitions and project are completed to the highest standards, on time, and on budget.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Working closely with Curatorial staff and external artists, conceive and develop original designs for temporary exhibitions and projects, including elements such as temporary walls, screens, media, pedestals, plinths, and vitrines; wall color; floor treatments; public seating; lighting; and object layouts.
Supervise the generation of CAD drawings and other computer renderings to communicate design concepts
Prepare and oversee production of detailed construction drawings based on final approved designs
Manage the making of models, maquettes, prototypes, and mockups for exhibitions and projects
Work closely with Manager, Exhibition Production and Installation and Manger, AV Installation to develop production, installation, and related staffing for each exhibition and project
Oversee and work closely with the Director, Exhibition Planning and Coordination as well as Manager, Exhibition Production and Installation and Manager, AV Installation on installation production, timelines and budgets for each exhibition and project, ensuring that all projects are completed to the highest standards, on time, and on budget
Review design proposals with Visitor Services, Safety and Security, Facilities, and Special Events to ensure clear communication and efficiency between exhibitions and visitor, building, and event needs
Ensure all construction is built to meet design standards; troubleshoot any issues that arise with fabricators and on the floor
Collaborate with in-house and outside graphic designers to integrate label, text, title, and directional signage with overall exhibition design
Archive final "as-built" drawings, installation views, and any other relevant materials
Produce presentation materials for senior staff, as needed, for exhibitions and projects
Working with Director of Facilities and other staff as required, participate in the assessment, design, and implementation of design projects for the museum not related to exhibitions and projects
Supervises Manager, Exhibition Design and Production, Manager, AV Installation, and any exhibition design staff as well as outside design and drafting contractors
Formulates and manages departmental Budget.
