Overview / Responsibilities

Wood is currently recruiting for Consultant / Principal Vibration Engineer (Piping/Static Equipment) to be based in Abu Dhabi office for a permanent/staff role.

Overview / Responsibilities: Consultant / Principal Engineer role within the Wood VDN (Vibration, Dynamics and Noise) Specialist Engineering Group based in the Abu Dhabi office. The primary role is to provide piping and static equipment vibration consultancy services to oil and gas operators in the Middle East. The primary responsibilities of the role are as follows:

Office based elements: Act as focal point and team lead for day-to-day field and static equipment related activities for the Abu Dhabi VDN team. Leading Energy Institute Guideline Qualitative and Quantitative vibration screening assessments of process plant. Leading Acoustic Induced Vibration (AIV) stage 1, 2 and 3 assessments. Including detailed simulation using Finite Element Analysis. Leading Flow Induced Vibration (FIV) studies. Including detailed simulation using Finite Element Analysis. Completing reportage required for projects without close supervision and with minimum oversight from senior colleagues. Managing all technical and commercial aspects of projects from initial proposal, through technical delivery, presentation to client and final invoicing. Assisting BD activities within the VDN and parent ALO (Asset Life Optimisation) teams. Assist the rotating equipment team lead and develop competence in rotating machinery. Supporting the VDN Head of Department to allow cover to be provided on short term basis as required.

Field based elements Leading field measurement campaigns in support of vibration troubleshooting of piping and machinery concerns. Liaising with client personnel on site and at all other stages of projects

Skills / Qualifications

Education: Suitable engineering degree and education from a recognised Academic institution. Masters/PhD level is desirable. Professional registration (i.e. CEng, CPEng, PEng) is desirable.

Technical/Business Skills: Essential: Competent in the application of the Energy Institute Guidelines for all excitation mechanisms for greenfield plant and brownfield modifications. Competent in the application of the primary AIV and FIV simulation packages used by Wood VDN. Specific experience in the use of such packages (e.g. ANSYS). Understand the application of various simulation packages used by Wood VDN (FEA, CFD, acoustic, surge analysis etc). Specific experience in the use of such packages (e.g. ANSYS, Caesar, PULS/BOS Fluids, PipeNet) is desirable. Competent in performing vibration, dynamic stress (bonded and friction gauges), dynamic pressure and noise measurements as required (at onshore and offshore sites). Understanding of process-related, operational, and other common excitation sources and able to collect all information relating to these in support of project goals. Be fully conversant with all vibration measurement equipment including transducers, analysers, and all accessories. Be able to demonstrate correct use of equipment to junior colleagues. Competent in the design of anti-vibration supports and production of fabrication diagrams and welding specifications. Desirable: Knowledge and application of piping and static equipment industry standards (i.e. ASME B31.1, B31.3, CAESAR II). Experience in basic high level coding languages for engineering analysis (e.g. MATLAB, C+, FAMOS).

Interpersonal Skills: Act as a mentor for junior engineers in all aspects of the above, in line with Wood policies. This involves formal training and informal assistance and guidance on a daily basis (in the office and on site). Under the direction of the VDN Head of Department demonstrate ability to perform project resource planning and tracking of staff movements and usage daily in response to changing priorities of clients. Comfortable to complete site-based work (12 hr shifts, upto 21 days continuous) on- and offshore globally Comfortable presenting project results and group competencies to existing and potential clients. Continually seek to develop Wood technical services, procedures, tools and technical resources. Develop leadership skills within small teams in the office and on site as required. These skills include (but are not limited to) motivation, enthusiasm, effective time management, good initiative and planning ability, good communications, excellent technical delivery, and an enthusiastic outlook.

Business and Industry Experience: Significant experience (>8 years) working in the on- and offshore petrochemical industry. Demonstrable experience of piping vibration troubleshooting and engineering project management.
