Job Description

Job Purpose
To provide expert clinical leadership and management for newborns requiring intensive and special care. The Consultant Neonatologist will be responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of neonates, ensuring the highest standards of medical practice, and providing mentorship to junior medical staff.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Duties:

  • Provide 24/7 consultant-led care for patients in the NICU and newborn nursery.
  • Lead the management of complex and critically ill neonates, including those requiring mechanical ventilation, therapeutic hypothermia, and other advanced life support measures.
  • Perform specialized procedures such as intubation, umbilical line placement, chest tube insertion, and lumbar puncture.
  • Lead and participate in high-risk deliveries and resuscitations.
  • Provide expert outpatient follow-up care for NICU graduates in a clinic setting.
  • Ensure all medical care is delivered in accordance with international best practices and DOH-Abu Dhabi policies and guidelines.
Administrative & Leadership Duties:
  • Act as the attending physician and team leader for the NICU multidisciplinary team.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of clinical protocols, policies, and pathways to enhance patient safety and outcomes.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, quality improvement initiatives, and hospital committees.
  • Ensure accurate, timely, and comprehensive medical record-keeping.
Teaching & Education:
  • Provide supervision, training, and mentorship to Residents, Fellows, and other junior medical staff.
  • Conduct regular teaching sessions, seminars, and simulation trainings for the NICU team.
  • Foster an environment of continuous learning and professional development.
Quality & Research:
  • Actively participate in clinical audits, morbidity and mortality meetings, and peer reviews.
  • Contribute to or lead clinical research projects to advance the field of neonatology.
  • Monitor and strive to improve key performance indicators (KPIs) for the NICU.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
Mandatory Requirements:
  • Medical Degree: MBBS or equivalent from an accredited medical school.
  • Post-Graduate Qualification: Board Certification in Pediatrics from the American Board, Canadian Fellowship, UK CCT, or their equivalent international recognized higher qualification.
  • Sub-Specialty: Fellowship or equivalent recognized sub-specialty qualification in Neonatology.
  • License: A valid DOH (Department of Health - Abu Dhabi) License, DOH Eligibility Letter, or a completed Dataflow Report is mandatory for application.
  • Experience: A minimum of 3-5 years of post-certification experience working as a Consultant Neonatologist in a high-volume, level III NICU.
Essential Skills & Competencies:
  • Proven expertise in all aspects of neonatal intensive care.
  • Excellent procedural skills relevant to neonatology.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively within a multicultural, multidisciplinary team.
  • Commitment to patient safety and quality of care.
  • Fluency in English (both written and verbal). Knowledge of Arabic is an advantage.
