Job Description

Reuters is seeking a tenacious, ambitious and accomplished reporter to conduct business investigations in the Middle East and Africa, as a member of our Global Enterprise team. The successful candidate will have a proven, multiyear track record of producing high-impact, attention-getting investigations, as demonstrated by their published work. They must show an ability to generate truly original ideas and to conceptualize and execute everything from a quick-turn investigation to a complex long-term project. They must be comfortable tackling a wide range of subjects in the business world, from finance, technology and state-owned oil industries to money laundering, economic crises and official corruption. We want reporters who are creative, collegial and collaborative - and able to thrive in a large, globe-spanning newsroom. In addition to working with other reporters and editors on our Enterprise team, the successful candidate will work closely with Reuters journalists around the world. Our clients and readers rely on Reuters to be the leading source of business news, and we view this position as a force multiplier for the indispensable work our beat journalists already provide. This is a reporting position that will regularly involve teaming up with other reporters and working closely with colleagues across the newsroom, including: our investigative projects editors; our data journalism team; our finance, commodities, corporate and political & general news reporters; and our photographers, videographers, graphics journalists and story designers. The Business Investigative Reporter will be based in the Middle East or Africa. They will report to a senior editor on the Enterprise team, reporting up to Global Enterprise Editor. As our Business Investigative Reporter, Middle East and Africa, you will:
  • Conceive your own original scoops and other high-impact investigative and explanatory stories and series
  • Put together a plan for executing stories, get the exclusive documents and unimpeachable sources needed to nail them down, and write logically and cleanly, even on complicated subjects
  • Report out not only the essential findings of your stories but also the big-picture context and implications of those findings
  • Bring to life the people, from the powerful to the weak, who are integral to your stories
  • Work in teams, both with other reporters and with photographers, videographers, graphics journalists and story designers who are central to our operation
  • Embrace and demonstrate Reuters commitment to fairness and accuracy through rigorous editing and bulletproofing of stories and ethical treatment of the people and institutions we cover
To be our Business Investigative Reporter, you will likely have:
  • Proven ability to produce investigative journalism of high impact and great sophistication as a lead reporter – as demonstrated by published clips
  • Proven ability to conceive and deliver both long-term reporting projects and quick-hit pieces – as demonstrated by published clips
  • Fluent Arabic
  • Experience producing business investigations
  • Experience reporting in the Middle East / Africa
  • Experience operating safely in conflict zones
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully with visual journalists
  • Other major languages would be helpful
  • Photography and videography skills would be useful
