Assistant Nurse - OPD
Job Title: Assistant Nurse - Outpatient Department (OPD)
Reports To: OPD Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior Staff Nurse
Department: Outpatient Department (OPD)
1. Job Summary
The Assistant Nurse in the OPD is a vital support role responsible for assisting Staff Nurses and other medical professionals in delivering efficient and high-quality patient care. The primary focus is on ensuring the smooth flow of patients, maintaining a clean and organized clinical environment, and performing basic nursing and administrative tasks under direct or indirect supervision. This role is crucial for creating a positive and welcoming first impression for all patients visiting the OPD.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Patient Care & Assistance:

  • Escort patients and their attendants to the appropriate consultation rooms or diagnostic areas.
  • Assist patients with mobility issues, including helping them onto examination couches.
  • Prepare patients for examination by the doctor (e.g., ensuring they are comfortable, providing gowns if needed).
  • Measure and record basic patient vitals such as weight, height, temperature, pulse, and blood pressure, and document them accurately.
  • Provide basic patient education as directed by the Staff Nurse or Doctor (e.g., post-procedure care, dietary advice).
B. Clinical Support & Documentation:
  • Ensure consultation rooms are clean, stocked with necessary supplies (e.g., gloves, tongue depressors, stationery), and ready for use.
  • Clean and disinfect examination couches, furniture, and equipment between patients.
  • Assist the Staff Nurse in setting up for and cleaning after minor procedures.
  • Manage the stock of linen and ensure adequate supply and proper disposal.
  • Handle and dispatch lab samples, reports, and patient documents as required.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of vitals and other assigned tasks.
C. Administrative & Clerical Duties:
  • Assist in the patient registration process and guide them through the OPD workflow.
  • Help in managing patient queues and maintaining order in the waiting area.
  • Answer basic inquiries from patients and direct them to the appropriate resources.
  • File and retrieve patient records/charts as needed.
D. Safety & Infection Control:
  • Strictly adhere to hospital infection control policies, including hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and proper waste segregation.
  • Follow all safety protocols for the handling of clinical equipment and hazardous materials.
3. Qualifications and Competencies
  • Education: Diploma in Nursing (GNM) or a certificate in Nursing Assistant/Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) from a recognized institution.
  • Registration: Must be registered with the respective State Nursing Council.
  • Experience: 0-2 years of experience in a hospital setting, preferably in an OPD.
  • Skills:
  • Basic clinical skills (vital signs measurement).
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Compassionate and patient-centric approach.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Basic computer literacy for data entry is preferred.
