Duties/Responsibilities:
Steel Fixer
Primary Role:
To build the steel reinforcement skeleton for concrete.
Tasks:
Reads and interprets engineering plans and drawings.
Cuts and bends steel bars to the correct shape and size.
Assembles the rebar and steel mesh according to plans, using wire, clips, or welding to secure it.
Ensures correct spacing, alignment, and placement of the steel to meet structural requirements.
Tools:
Often uses hand and power tools, welding equipment, and hoisting gear.
Shuttering Carpenter
Primary Role:
To create the temporary forms into which concrete will be poured.
Tasks:
Measures, cuts, and assembles shuttering materials, which can include plywood, timber, or steel plates.
Installs the formwork in the correct position and ensures it is sturdy and watertight to hold the wet concrete.
Works closely with steel fixers and masons to ensure the entire structure is properly prepared before the concrete is poured.
Tools:
Uses a variety of woodworking and construction tools, such as saws, hammers, and drills.
