Basic Function

Performs a wide variety of laboratory chemical, microscopic and/or bacteriologic tests to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

Scope

Working in Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare Clinical Laboratory Services Section/Medical & Technical Support Services department in Dhahran, Al Hasa, Ras Tanura, Abqaiq and Udhailiyah (HA, RT, ABQ and UDH) under direction and supervision of Clinical Laboratory Technologist Specialist. Technologists deal with infectious samples, examining microorganisms for medical purposes while exercising the best safety measures to minimize the risk of any hazardous accidents. Dhahran Medical Technologist may rotate through the various areas within the laboratory in order to be familiar with the different lab procedures/tests performed throughout the lab especially when working shifts. District Medical Technologist performs a variety of clinical tests in a combination of areas of specialization.

Principal Contacts

Has daily direct contact with triage/collection lab for specimen collection, and with pathologies, physicians, nurses or other healthcare workers such as infection control and epidemiology in order to collaborate results and attend to questions/concerns about specimens, communicable/reportable diseases and laboratory reports. Report to Technical Supervisor.

Principal Duties

All techs should be familiar with Laboratory interface system (LIS), daily Quality Control QC, Calibration and Preventive Maintenance (PM) activities along with basic troubleshooting of instruments. Assist the Medical Lab Specialist in the day-day operation. Check patient's samples to determine whether specimen collection process including patient identification were performed appropriately. Trained to handle full shift, night skipper and stagger duties and are flexible to overtime according to operational needs. Perform internal and external (CAP) survey when assigned by the lab manager or leader. Performs all functions that are required for the laboratory to maintain and meet the standards specified by accrediting agencies such as College of American Pathologists (CAP), American Association for Blood Bank (AABB), Joint Commission International (JCI) and local standard Saudi Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions (CBAHI). Oversees orientation and training for assigned employees in coordination with medical laboratory training coordinator. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of section instrumentation as assigned. Performs monitoring, recording waste and inventory of supply items. Performs and effectively evaluates & documents the quality control for each procedure performed. Demonstrates general knowledge and understanding of Quality Control (QC) by effectively using the appropriate QC guidelines and follow up. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of instrumentation as assigned. Maintaining and operating standard laboratory equipment, for example Centrifuges and pipettes. Follows up with reference laboratory and reports results to physician, infection control and epidemiology. Maintains clean and sanitary work area in accordance with standard laboratory practice and procedures. Chemistry: Can be involved in committees (Such as Transfusion review, QI Audits, CAP and AABB accreditation) that help in maintaining high quality standards and developing section operation to a higher levels. Can be assigned as section manager and/or provide coverage to section manager. Can be assigned as leader/manager and covers administrative related tasks such as conducting monthly meetings, arranging work schedules and overtimes, writing operational manuals, submitting monthly reports of achievements and goals for our section, preparing special and monthly reports for upper management. Performs all managerial functions common to the unit level established by management including compliance with company polices on any auditable activity, vacation planning for all employees to ensure even coverage and input to the senior Supervisor regarding preparation of operating and business plans, accountability reports, training plans, promotion &salary planning, etc. Performs all kind of routine Chemistry tests using automated analyzers or manual techniques Operates and maintains sophisticated instruments and equipment used in the section, is able to properly set up, calibrate, maintain, operate, trouble shoot and shut down such instruments.

Chemistry (cont'd) Able to interpret Chemistry test's results, take proper action and decision to either accept or reject results. Evaluate historical data, search and resolve discrepancies before continuing with result verification. Identify unusual results or discrepancies/conditions which cause erroneous results; take appropriate action to make corrections and solve problems; advice on course of action to follow when results are unacceptable. Brings unresolved problems to the attention of unit manager. Report Critical Values to ordering physician/nurse in charge immediately upon their completion and document this according to Lab policies and procedures. Operates and maintains sophisticated instruments and equipment used in Chemistry Unit, able to properly set up, calibrate, maintain, operate and shut down such instruments. Maintains competence in Laboratory Information System that is crucial to the quality operations of the laboratory and patient care. Apply quality control & quality assurance procedures and practices when performing reagent preparation and use equipment assembly and performance. Performs and records periodic quality control analysis, instrument function checks and preventive maintenance procedures following approved policy. Performs instrument comparison, carry over and other quality check studies according to lab policies and procedures. Performs additional procedures as required to ensure the quality of the laboratory testing performed; and documents this activity. Actively participates in Quality Improvement Programs essential to ensure that laboratory testing is accurate, timely and meets customer needs. Performs laboratory tests and procedures, which require technical skill and an exercise of independent judgment with minimal supervision, and documents results to ensure compliance with Medical Center and regulatory requirements. Applies sound technical judgment in evaluating problems and developing prompt, reasonable, workable alternatives, which benefit the patient within established guidelines of the department. Handles varying workloads while maintaining accuracy. Follows approved policies and procedures in performing specific methodologies and instrument operations and follows approved policies for proper recording (accuracy and legibility) and reporting of all results. Assures that adequate supplies are available at all times. Oversees orientation and training for assigned employees, follow up employee competencies annually. On an assigned basis, may direct and coordinate the activities of an assigned group or shift to insure that all work is performed according to established procedures and that all standards for quality, service and safety are met. Participates in the evaluation of new procedures and analytical systems, modification of existing procedures, update of procedure manuals, evaluation of new products, and other investigative projects. Assists less experienced personnel by providing technical guidance and help in solving problems. Participate in pro-active functions that impact production, increase efficiency in Chemistry lab, solve problems encountered. Ensure that all documentation is prepared, reviewed and revised, as required including QC reports, instruments function checks, QM/QI reports and staff working schedule. Assure lab equipment is qualified, calibrated and within PM due date.

Environmental Chemistry: Work as actin section leader along with his regular duties. He has some responsibility for all day to day work including quality control & reporting review and managing work flow. Assist in handling supplies ordering to make sure every things are available all times. Monitor work progress according to CAP and review reports. Set up, operate, and calibrate medical equipment. Collect and label samples. Prepare cultures of samples for analysis. Conduct all environmental range of tests clinical or environment. Report the results on the system. Properly store samples to preserve them for further analysis; Keep the lab neat, organized, and sanitary; Maintain patient report forms and lab records; Coordinate with other hospitals and assist them to meet higher standard Point of Care Testing (POCT): POC Training & Certification: Able to solely carry out complete POC training for nurses/caregivers. Must be able to answer all their queries & direct them on a daily basis as required. Performs site quality management activities for testing, policies, accreditation and licensure. Manages training & certification of nursing staff and administering competency assessments in all areas of POCT. POC Procedure Study & Implementation: study all aspects of implementing POC procedures which enhance patient encounter & improve health outcomes. This includes but is not limited to validation studies, comparative studies, expansions, etc. Able to exercise independent judgment, analytic priority-setting, & troubleshooting skills. Point of Care & Quality Assurance Coordinator: Accountable for laboratory quality and process improvement efforts, through timely review and analysis of quality assurance data, preparing summaries and reports, and coordinating required follow-up and process improvement activities in all laboratory sections. Accountable for accuracy and reliability of all laboratory testing performed outside laboratory by non-laboratory staff. Interacts with Laboratory Services Manager, Medical Director, Quality Improvement & Risk Management Director, and other managers and physicians, as necessary, to ensure that all regulatory requirements are met, according to established protocol for hospital performing high complexity point of care testing (POCT) procedures, as defined by standards of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). Drafts all necessary policies, procedures, and POCT training and competency documents utilized by POCT personnel, and maintains records of competency testing, according to regulatory guidelines. Prepares regular summaries for senior laboratory leadership team. Responsible for performing special projects, as assigned.

Education

Bachelor's degree in medical technology or science program accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) is required. Master's degree or PhD in Health systems or Clinical laboratory technology related fields or equivalent is preferred.

Experience

Minimum of 10 years' technical experience in Clinical laboratory.

Certification/Other requirements as applicable

Saudi Commission for health specialties Licensure requirement must be met. All medical technologists must be certified through the Board of Certification (BOC) Good communication in oral and written English. Must possess a keen sense of responsibility with regards to the business operation of section as dealing with manpower and materials budget. Must be familiar with proficiency testing, quality control, key performance indicators and accreditation standards and requirements. Thorough knowledge of company policies and procedures, statistics and JHAH emergency disaster plans and response. Acceptable level of analytical ability in order to complete tasks assigned, gather and interpret data from different courses, and resolve problems. Must be qualified for the required Medical License. Willing to work shift pattern as required (day, evening, night). Willing to work overtime if required. Flexible, and willing to work in any Clinical laboratory District -wide(HA, RT, ABQ and UDH)
