Basic Function

Processes and performs microscopic examination of clinical specimens to distinguish normal body cells from benign abnormalities, malignant and potentially malignant cells.

Scope

Working in Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare Clinical Laboratory Services Section/Medical & Technical Support Services department in Dhahran, Al Hasa, Ras Tanura, Abqaiq and Udhailiyah (HA, RT, ABQ and UDH) under direction and supervision of senior supervisor. Technologists deal with infectious samples, examining microorganisms for medical purposes while exercising the best safety measures to minimize the risk of any hazardous accidents. In accordance with established techniques and procedures prepares stains, and examines for malignant cells, smears from internal body surfaces or fluids. Calls to the attention of a pathologist any deviations from the normal which might be malignant or in the direction of malignancy. Smears and specimens are received, logged and processed from all JHAH facilities and from authorized outside facilities. The position requires careful and complete examination of vaginal, eye and buccal smears and specimens such as spinal fluid, body cavity fluid, urine and sputum. Receives direct medical supervision from Pathology Services Division. Reports administratively to the senior supervisor/director.

Principal Duties

1. Technologist should be familiar with Laboratory interface system (LIS), daily Quality Control (QC), Calibration and Preventive Maintenance (PM) activities along with basic troubleshooting of instruments. 2. Assist the Medical Lab Specialist in the day-day operation. 3. Check patient's samples to determine whether specimen collection process including patient identification were performed appropriately. 4. Perform internal and external (CAP) survey when assigned by the lab manager or leader. 5. Performs all functions that are required for the laboratory to maintain and meet the standards specified by accrediting agencies such as College of American Pathologists (CAP), Joint Commission International (JCI), American Association for Blood Bank (AABB), Saudi Central Board for Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions(CBAHI) 6. Performs monitoring, recording waste and inventory of supply items if required. 7. Performs and effectively evaluates & documents the quality control for each procedure performed. 8. Demonstrates general knowledge and understanding of QC by effectively using the appropriate QC guidelines and follow up. 9. Maintaining and operating standard laboratory equipment, for example Centrifuges and pipettes. 10. Maintains clean and sanitary work area in accordance with standard laboratory practice and procedures. 11. Examines under a microscope slides from body fluids and internal body surfaces to determine presence or absence of malignant cells. Specimens in which no malignant cells are seen are determined to be negative for malignancy. Specimens in which suspicious or malignant cells are noted are referred to a pathologist for further review. Responsible for assuring that no malignant or suspicious cells are overlooked. 12. Discusses and examines with a pathologist all malignant cells and those cells that may show borderline changes or where distinction is not clearly apparent in order to arrive at an early and accurate diagnosis. 13. Assists physicians during endoscopic procedures and needle aspirations in order to assure that proper and sufficient material is obtained. 14. Receives a variety of smears and specimens for processing. Processes specimens by assigning a unique specimen number to avoid specimen misidentification. Slides are stained using automated or manual staining techniques.

15. Uses anatomic pathology module of Laboratory Information System for processing specimens and entering results of examinations. 16. Participates in Quality Improvement Program with Pathology Services Division to assure that misdiagnosis based on results of the procedures do not occur. 17. Files slides according to their unique number for further reference. 18. Performs other miscellaneous related duties as requested. 19. Demonstrates and adheres to hospital and department policies regarding work habits. Maintains confidentiality of information regarding patients, employees, clinic and hospital. Adheres to stand precautions, handwashing, sharps disposal, hazardous waste communication and fire and electrical safety. Complies with time, attendance, break, conflict and other lab policies. Dresses according to JHAH directed dress code guidelines. Maintains clean shaven face (male associates) to allow for utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE) when required by infection control guidelines and safe engineering practices. 20. Strives to be a productive and professional member of the institution. Utilizes time effectively. Prioritize work properly and organizes in accordance with the hospital and department mission and objectives. Completes work in a timely fashion. Follows through and carries out all aspects of work assignments being attentive to details and ensuring work is complete and accurate Effectively monitors work activity impacting the quality of service provided. Investigates problems. Keeps up to date through in services, continuing education, and /or professional programs and utilizes such knowledge and skills in the daily work activities. Recognizes problems beyond the scope of the position and brings these to the attention of the technical supervisor. Takes initiative to seek out additional responsibilities or assist the supervisor with departmental projects (i.e. new tests, evaluations.) Actively participates in continuous quality improvement and laboratory teamwork. Provides laboratory testing in other areas of laboratory as required, consistent with level of competency. 21. Provides instruction in the technical and professional skills for various types of laboratory students. Participates in the sub-department training of MLT students by teaching at the bench. Assists in the orienting of new employees into the cytology. Assists with any "on the job" training programs (i.e. technician Þ technologist program) Instructs others within the department or on other shifts following instrument specific training sponsored by the hospital and clinic. 22. Other if applicable: LIS Functions: Must have full knowledge and proficiency on the day to day LIS functionalities employed in the section. Train the new-hires on the LIS functionalities used in the section as deem necessary. Comply with the applicable JHAH Safety rules and policies, standard precautions and maintain safe work practices at all times. Report injuries, spills, unsafe conditions, near misses and incidents immediately. Maintain knowledge of Safety requirements including Emergency Response actions, Fire Training, mandatory Safety courses, BLS certification and participate in all required Safety drills

Education

Bachelor of Science with Medical Technology or Cytology major.

Experience

Minimum of 8 years' post-graduate experience in Clinical laboratory and perform "High Complexity" testing.

Certifications/Other requirements as applicable

Must have passed a recognized certification examination in Cytology and completion of one year specialty training in cytology. Saudi Commission for health specialties Licensure requirement must be met./ Must be qualified for the required Medical License. All medical technologists must be certified through the Board of Certification (BOC) Good communication in oral and written English. Must possess a keen sense of responsibility with regards to the business operation of section as dealing with manpower and materials budget. Must be familiar with proficiency testing, quality control, key performance indicators and accreditation standards and requirements. Thorough knowledge of company policies and procedures, statistics and JHAH emergency disaster plans and response. Acceptable level of analytical ability in order to complete tasks assigned, gather and interpret data from different courses, and resolve problems. Good computer skill Willing to work shift pattern as required (day, evening, night). Willing to work overtime if required. willing to work in any Clinical laboratory District -wide (HA, RT, ABQ and UDH)
