Runner
Primary Objective: To serve as the vital link between the kitchen and the dining room, ensuring that food is delivered to the correct table quickly, accurately, and presented properly. The Runner enhances the guest experience by ensuring food arrives hot and as described.
Key Responsibilities
1. Food Expediting & Delivery:

• Retrieve prepared food orders from the kitchen expeditiously.
• Verify the accuracy of each order against the kitchen ticket before leaving the window.
• Deliver food to the correct table and seat number, announcing dishes as they are placed.
• Ensure all necessary accompaniments, sauces, and sides are present.

2. Quality Control & Presentation:

• Ensure all plates are clean and presentation meets the restaurant's standards.
• Identify any obvious errors in an order (e.g., incorrect cooking temperature) before it reaches the guest.
• Assist in adding final garnishes or touches before delivery.

3. Support for Servers:

• Work in tandem with Waitstaff, allowing them to focus on guest interaction and drink service.
• Assist servers by fetching condiments, extra utensils, or other items for guests.
• Help clear tables of empty plates and glassware between courses.

4. Kitchen & Dining Room Communication:

• Communicate any issues or delays from the kitchen to the serving team.
• Inform the expo or chef of any guest feedback or concerns heard on the floor.
• Maintain a clean and organized kitchen pass and runner station.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Excellent spatial awareness and balance for carrying large trays.
• Good communication skills to interact with both kitchen and service staff.
• Team player with a "can-do" attitude.
• Physical stamina for standing, walking, and carrying heavy trays.
• Basic knowledge of menu items to answer simple guest questions.

Key Differences & Team Structure
While the roles are distinct, they are deeply interconnected:

• Waiters/Waitresses are the hosts and salespeople, focused on the guest relationship.
• Runners are the logistical experts, focused on the efficient and accurate delivery of the product.

In many modern restaurants, the duties of Runners and Bussers are often combined into a single "Server Assistant" role. In a well-staffed, high-volume establishment, this separation allows for a highly specialized and efficient service team, where each member can excel in their specific function.
