Job Description

Summary: As Design Engineer you will be a key member of a design team that is responsible for delivering a range of class-leading innovative engineering designs and solutions to satisfy customers. Acting with minimum guidance from the Engineering Manager, you are a highly competent individual with the ability to both lead and complete design tasks throughout all phases of a project lifecycle from proposals to completion, on time and on budget. A significant appreciation of the commercial implications of design decisions along with a strong awareness of modern manufacturing technologies and practises are critical to this role. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • All tasks are carried out in accordance with Engineering group policies and quality procedures under the leadership of the Engineering Manager and Bit Design Specialists.
  • Contribute to sales and marketing efforts to ensure products offered are in line with engineering group and company strategies
  • Support design projects as allocated by the Engineering Manager with minimal supervision
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and ensure timely delivery of all necessary design tasks and within budget
  • Prepare, check and approve associated engineering documents (such as drawings, technical illustrations, manuals, reports and calculations) and ensure they are completed within the required timescales
  • Develop and lead test programs and factory acceptance tests to validate designs
  • Identify solutions to design problems in assigned projects
  • Utilise standard engineering calculations related to specific design or analytical projects under direction of senior engineer.
  • Complete assignments received from supervisor using established design tools and procedures.
  • See project through to completion with assistance of technical personnel.
  • Develop accurate and complete documentation of data and project results in a timely manner.
  • Interact with personnel in other departments and disciplines.
  • Participate in action plans for new projects defined by supervisor.
  • Consistently produce quality work and recommend areas where quality can be improved.
  • Engineering Change procedures are implemented thoroughly, ensuring minimum disruption to the business at all times
  • Ensure all assigned deliverables are technically in accordance with client requirements and established contract requirements
  • Chair client meetings and monitor individual's performance to ensure customer care is at the foremost position
  • Remain aware and involved in the latest developments within the industry and the greater engineering world to identify any potential concepts that could be incorporated into new designs
  • Travel as and when required in order to support the business
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties when requested by a line manager

Qualifications (Essential):
  • HND Engineering or equivalent
Qualifications (Desirable):
  • B.S. in Engineering/Scientific discipline or equivalent.
Experience:
  • Working knowledge of leading design projects within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Working knowledge within a manufacturing environment and within the Energy Industry, specifically within drill bits
  • Relevant experience within Oil and Gas
Skills, training or special knowledge (Essential):
  • Computer literacy (including good command of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook)
  • Product Line Specific Orientation - Can describe specific tool applications and how the internals of the tool function.
  • Knowledge Management - Able to navigate in the portal and perform simple searches
  • IP Series Training – Understand what intellectual property is.
  • CAD - Create/manipulate simple models/parts/assemblies.
  • FEA (As required by product line) Run simple analyses.
  • CFD - (As required by product line) Run simple analyses.
  • HCM - Perform reviews & feedback efficiently using HCM.
  • PLM - Able to create parts using the right process workflows, track workflows progress, perform simple searches
  • ERP – Can explain what the application is for and the product lines included.
  • IMS – Able to make use of creating favorite list, providing updates, uploading documents
  • Itrax / Qfocus - Familiar with investigation process flow. Is knowledgeable about how to access the application. Can create, input information, and save incidents.
  • TrakATool - Can explain what the application is for and the product lines included
  • ToolRun (Drill Bits Only) Able to run a query and print reports
Skills, training or special knowledge (Desirable): Design codes: API 6A, 5CT, 16, 17 and others, NACE, EC Directives and CE Marking, ASME, ATEX, Norsok, EN12079/DNV2.7-1, Puwer and Loler
Quality Assurance: - Carry out all duties in accordance with the Quality Assurance procedures and department/area work instructions. - Contribute to general improvements in the quality and key activities of the department/area.
Training: Participate in training where required.
Health, Safety and Environment: Carry out all duties safely and in accordance with the Health & Safety Policy, Employee Handbook, procedures, training and instruction. To be safety conscious and report any safety hazards to the HSE representative.
