(Roles and Responsibilities)
The British Embassy in Kuwait is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual for the position of Political and Economic Analyst, job grade Executive Officer (EO). The successful candidate will work in the Political Team and be responsible for the following:
  • Researching, analysing and reporting on Kuwait\xe2\x80\x99s domestic politics, economy and foreign policy to ensure Embassy and UK Government colleagues in London and the region understand key developments. This will also help to shape our policy priorities.
  • Building relationships with contacts to assist this research, analysis and reporting as well as the work of the Political Team and the wider Embassy.
  • Planning and running events and programmes that support the Embassy\xe2\x80\x99s human rights priorities, especially gender equality.
  • Assisting with inward visits of UK Ministers, VIPs and senior officials.
Roles and responsibilities:
  • Establish a network of contacts to assist with political and economic research, analysis and reporting, and to progress the Embassy\xe2\x80\x99s human rights objectives. Maintain a detailed knowledge of political and economic events and trends (e.g. through meeting contacts, monitoring the press and social media, attending diwaniyas etc.). Advise the Political Team and other colleagues on key contacts and help prepare Diwaniya/ Ghabqa information to inform Embassy visits during Ramadan.
  • Lead on developing and running the Embassy\xe2\x80\x99s strategy on gender equality.
  • Assist in arranging programmes for inward visitors, including UK Ministers, VIPs and Senior Officials.
  • Conduct political and economic research and analysis and use this to contribute to oral and written briefing.
  • Attend functions, receptions and other external events, sometimes as the Embassy\xe2\x80\x99s only representative. Accompany Political Team colleagues to external meetings and produce records of these. Attend and at times plan / run Embassy events.
  • Provide cover for the Communications & Campaigns Officer, including drafting daily Press summaries, as well as for other members of the Political and Prosperity Teams during their absences.
  • General administration of Political Team resources, including leading on keeping the database of key contacts and biographies up-to-date.
  • Line manage the Visits and Administrative Officer.
The above list is not exhaustive. The jobholder will be required to be flexible and take on other ad hoc tasks as required and in keeping with changing priorities of the team. Key behaviours required for the job:

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
  • Relevant work experience in a similar field and an extensive knowledge of Kuwait\xe2\x80\x99s political system, economy, culture and society.
  • Good general IT skills: (e.g. knowledge of Microsoft Office programmes such as Word, Excel and Outlook) and internet-based research skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills in both English and Arabic, and experience of report writing. Excellent translation skills between Arabic and English. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication.
  • Strong networking and interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish and maintain relationships with key contacts.
  • Organisational, analytical and time management skills, with very good attention to detail.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
  • Programme management and budgeting skills.
  • Experience of organising and running events.

Working conditions and remuneration: The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of KWD 1,039.336 per month. The package includes a good level of medical insurance, a return flight fare to your home country for non-Kuwaitis every two years, relevant social security payments for Kuwaiti nationals, and an engaging working environment. Leave entitlement is 30 days per year (on pro rata basis) plus 14 public holidays. There are no other allowances payable as part of this package. No accommodation and relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. This position is for a full-time employment, on permanent contract, subject to a 3-month probationary period. Conditioned working hours are 38 hours gross per week (this is made up of 35.5 hours net per week and a daily 30-minute lunch break). The normal working hours are 07:30 \xe2\x80\x93 15:30 from Sunday to Wednesday and 07:30 \xe2\x80\x93 13:30 on Thursday. Due to the nature of the work, the jobholder should be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out-of-hours (evening / weekend). The Embassy has an active Continuous Professional Development Committee, and the whole of Post is committed to providing the time and resources for staff to develop professionally. The 70/20/10 learning, and development model is applied in a flexible manner, with both internal and formal opportunities readily available. There will likely be an expectation of undertaking training specific to crisis response/management in 2023.
