Job Description

Medical Research Specialist 1 College of Medicine and Health Sciences, UAEU. Employed as a full-time staff member at the Department of Physiology, participating in research, teaching, and administrative activities.
The MRS will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the research laboratory and training graduate and undergraduate students. Be instrumental in organizing and conducting overall research, including conducting given animal, human, and in-vitro experiments, data collection and management, statistical data analysis, grant application and budgetary management, preparation of initial manuscripts, grants, and other outputs, contributing significantly to the research output of the University.
The MRS will be responsible for laboratory safety and policy, maintaining and troubleshooting all laboratory equipment and instruments, creating and disseminating standard operating procedures and policies, maintaining experimental records and consumables inventories, and ordering and procuring laboratory supplies and consumables.
In addition, the MRS will organize, carry out and assist in teaching Physiology practicals for undergraduate medical students, including practical laboratory and computer-based learning sessions.

  • Independently conduct experiments involving various gastrointestinal physiology in-vitro techniques, including electrophysiology-related research areas.
  • Conduct experiments involving mammalian cell isolation and primary cell culture methodologies.
  • Independently conduct experiments involving general molecular biology techniques, including PCR, RNA preparation/extraction and gel electrophoresis, immunocytochemistry, and ELISA.
  • Assist in surgical and other procedures for setting up various experimental animal models.
  • Assist in various experiments involving animal handling, stimulation, and behavior examination.
  • Assist in human experiments involving non-invasive brain stimulation and EEG recording on normal subjects and patients.
  • Supervise undergraduate medical students in Physiology practicals and computer-based learning sessions.
  • Assist in training and supervision of graduate and undergraduate students on specific laboratory techniques relevant to their projects.
  • Train and supervise other research staff recruited on grants, graduate and undergraduate students on all aspects of laboratory work.
Minimum Qualification
  • Bachelor's Degree (B.Sc.) in a relevant medical or biomedical discipline.
  • Master's Degree (M.Sc.) in a relevant medical or biomedical discipline.
Preferred Qualification
Ph.D. in Physiology/Pharmacology or related medical or biomedical discipline.
Demonstrated technical proficiency with immunofluorescence, microscopy, and imaging techniques, GI inflammatory bowel disease models, in-vitro GI motility models, combined motility and slow-wave propagation methodology, and transepithelial/transendothelial electrical resistance quantitative techniques. High level of independent thinking, creativity, and goal-oriented productivity. Excellent interpersonal and written/oral communication skills. Ability to identify and support the implementation of best practices.
