Job Summary:
The Marine Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, maintaining, repairing, and servicing marine vessels, including boats, ships, yachts, and other watercraft. This role involves working with diesel and gasoline engines, propulsion systems, electrical systems, and other mechanical components to ensure safe and efficient operation.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on marine engines (inboard, outboard, sterndrive) and propulsion systems.
  • Conduct routine maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and cooling system checks.
  • Inspect and repair fuel systems, steering systems, hydraulic systems, and exhaust systems.
  • Service and maintain electrical systems, including wiring, batteries, and navigation equipment.
  • Diagnose and fix mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic malfunctions.
  • Overhaul or replace defective parts such as pumps, propellers, transmissions, and gears.
  • Test vessels in water or on land to verify proper operation after repairs.
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines, technical manuals, and safety protocols.
  • Keep detailed records of inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
  • Assist with boat haul-outs, launches, and winterization procedures.
  • Work with welding, fabrication, and machining tools when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
Qualifications & Skills:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical/vocational training in marine mechanics preferred.
  • Certification from ABYC (American Boat & Yacht Council) or similar is a plus.
  • Proven experience as a Marine Mechanic or similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of marine diesel and gasoline engines (e.g., Mercury, Yanmar, Volvo Penta).
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, multimeters, and repair equipment.
  • Ability to read schematics, blueprints, and technical manuals.
  • Physical stamina to work in confined spaces, lift heavy equipment, and handle outdoor conditions.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Valid driver's license; boating license may be required.
Work Environment:
  • Work in marinas, shipyards, docks, or repair shops.
  • Exposure to weather, fumes, noise, and hazardous materials.
  • May require travel to vessels in need of emergency repairs.
