What Does a Learning Support Assistant Do?
As an LSA, you'll work closely with classroom teachers and the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO) to support students with diverse learning needs. Your role will include individualized instruction, assisting in implementing IEPs, and promoting an inclusive, student-centered learning environment.
What Are the Key Responsibilities?
- Provide one-on-one and small group academic support for students with special educational needs
- Assist teachers in adapting and differentiating lessons to meet student needs
- Help students remain focused, complete classroom activities, and develop social-emotional skills
- Monitor and support behavior using positive reinforcement strategies
- Support classroom management and supervision during lessons, breaks, field trips, and school events
- Assist in preparing materials and maintaining records of student progress
- Collaborate with teaching staff, SENCO, and parents to align learning support strategies
- Attend staff meetings and professional development sessions to stay updated with best practices in inclusive education
What Qualifications Are Required?
Education & Experience:
- Minimum of a high school diploma; additional certification or a degree in special education, teaching support, or a related field is preferred
- Prior experience working with children with special needs is highly desirable
Skills & Traits:
- Strong communication, empathy, and interpersonal skills
- Patience and the ability to build trust with students
- Basic knowledge of child development and inclusive education strategies
- Ability to use educational technology to support differentiated learning
- Respect for confidentiality and cultural sensitivity in a diverse school setting
