Job Purpose

The Laboratories Manager is responsible for managing and overseeing all functional planning and contributing to the strategic planning for physical research infrastructure of the Research Center and developing the physical laboratories into world-class facilities that support high-quality research and attract external collaborators.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Strategic Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development of the center's strategy, as well as annual business plans.
  • Contribute to the development of the center's policies and procedures, in line with the overall business objectives of the University, ensuring they promote leading practices and excellence.
  • Contribute to the development and management of the center's budgets and report back on a timely basis to ensure that divergences are addressed promptly.
Operational Responsibilities
  • Responsible for managing and overseeing all functional planning and contributing to the strategic planning for physical research infrastructure and developing the laboratories into world-class facilities to support high-quality research and attract external collaborators and funding.
  • Formulate and implement short and long-term goals for the operation and improvement of the research laboratories.
  • Project future needs in coordination with relevant research and academic leadership and formulate strategies consistent with projections.
  • Oversee the implementation and review of policies and procedures applicable to the center laboratories, including, but not limited to, equipment service and maintenance, handling and disposal of materials and supplies, and laboratory user fees and charge-back accounting.
  • Establish policies and procedures applicable to fees/charge-back accounting for use of the center laboratories, in line with leading practices and legal compliance.
  • Manage the center budget for the laboratories and supporting staff, including the preparation of annual budget requests and supervision of expenditures.
  • Oversee lab spending for capital and operating expenditures.
  • Interface with faculty to determine research space requirements and preferences.
  • Actively lead staff, service and equipment programs that will increase usage of the laboratories and promote collaboration within the University as well as with external industrial and academic partners.
  • Work closely with the Facilities Department to support effective operations, including routine support services, installation of new equipment and renovation of the center laboratories.
  • Work closely with the Procurement Department to support effective and efficient acquisition of research capital equipment and supplies.
  • Supervise subordinates to ensure compliance with established practices, to implement new policies and to keep employees abreast of current changes and standards. Assure that the laboratory technicians and engineers are properly trained in Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) and equipment specific requirements.
  • Coordinate activities of various teams to assure that space is allocated and utilized in a manner that supports the long and short term research goals of the center.
  • Establish and manage stock room programs to increase access to commonly used consumables and parts.
  • Review and provide solutions to compliance issues within the center related to laboratory operations
  • Ensure adherence to the University's information security policies and procedures, and report breaches or other security risks accordingly.
  • Ensure coordination with other departments to facilitate the accomplishment of tasks and responsibilities, as and when needed.
  • Perform any other tasks assigned by Line Manager.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Provide coaching, guidance and mentoring as required to enhance the internal capabilities of the team and ensure the achievement of established objectives and plans.
  • Recommend appropriate training courses as per the pre-determined training needs, evaluate their effectiveness, and monitor their results.
  • Carry out performance appraisals for subordinates according to planned schedules and recommend necessary actions as per the applied practices.
  • Conduct periodic meetings with subordinates to ensure that priorities are clear and workflow is running smoothly.
  • Follow-up on employees' administrative affairs such as vacations, leaves and other administrative and related affairs.
Qualifications

Qualifications & Experience

Required Qualifications

A Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science related field. Master's Degree Preferred.

Required Experience

Expats: A minimum 12 years of relevant experience.

UAE Nationals: A minimum of 8 years of relevant experience
