Job Description

Job Purpose:
The Head of Inclusion (SEN Department) is responsible for leading and managing the Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision across the school, ensuring that all students with additional needs receive high-quality support to achieve their full potential. The role involves strategic leadership, staff development, and collaboration with stakeholders to promote an inclusive learning environment.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and implement the school's SEN policy and inclusion strategy in line with national guidelines (e.g., SEND Code of Practice).
  • Lead the SEN Department, ensuring effective provision for students with SEN, disabilities, and additional learning needs.
  • Monitor and evaluate the impact of SEN provision, using data to drive improvements.
  • Work with senior leadership to ensure inclusion is embedded across the curriculum.
2. Teaching & Learning
  • Oversee the identification, assessment, and support for students with SEN.
  • Ensure high-quality teaching and differentiated learning strategies are in place.
  • Lead interventions, IEP (Individual Education Plan) development, and EHCP (Education, Health, and Care Plan) coordination.
  • Support teachers in adapting lessons for SEN students.
3. Staff Development & Training
  • Provide training and guidance to staff on SEN best practices.
  • Mentor and manage SEN coordinators, teaching assistants, and support staff.
  • Promote a culture of inclusion and awareness across the school.
4. Collaboration & Partnerships
  • Work closely with parents, external agencies (e.g., educational psychologists, speech therapists), and local authorities.
  • Attend multi-agency meetings and ensure effective communication between all stakeholders.
  • Advocate for students with SEN, ensuring their voices are heard in decision-making.
5. Compliance & Safeguarding
  • Ensure the school meets legal and statutory requirements regarding SEN provision.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports for inspections (e.g., Ofsted).
  • Safeguard the welfare of vulnerable students, following school and national policies.
Person Specification:
Essential Qualifications & Experience:
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with significant SEN experience.
  • NASENCO (National Award for SEN Coordination) qualification or willingness to obtain it.
  • Proven leadership experience in an SEN/inclusion role.
  • Strong knowledge of SEND legislation (e.g., Children & Families Act 2014).
