Head of Department - Special Educator and Wellbeing

Business Unit: THE MILLENNIUM SCHOOL - DUBAI

About the Role

An HOD is expected to manage the following domains:

Domains of Influence, Modelling, Mentoring, Supporting

Be the \xe2\x80\x9cglue\xe2\x80\x9d that binds the team. Give space to divergent thinking, listen to divergent opinions, assimilate outliers.

Align the functioning of the department to GEMS Core Values, TMS\' Vision & Mission.

Ensure collaborative practice, drive teamwork.

Keep abreast of best practices in pedagogy and share the learning with School and department.

Conduct workshops for professional development.

Support a culture of reciprocal lesson observation.

Mentor colleagues, support new talent.

Break silos by collaborating with other heads of department to deliver curriculum as \xe2\x80\x9cflow.\xe2\x80\x9d

Encourage initiatives that bring fresh exposure to the Department: collaborating across departments and/or other schools, conducting Action Research, participating in teaching/learning surveys, etc.

Model collegial discourse and professional conduct.

Model outstanding teaching-learning skills, and reflective practice.

Practice distributive leadership: assign responsibilities or delegate tasks among colleagues to fuel learning and growth.

Domains of Accountability, Compliance

Ensure compliance with all statutory requirements of KHDA that are applicable to the department.

Ensure that all statutory requirements of the CBSE are met.

Ensure dissemination and integration of DSIB expectations, terminology in planning, and professional discourse within the department.

Liaise with Head of Assessment and uphold institutional norms regarding setting standard question papers for internal assessments and other practice/mock examinations, coordinating marking schemes and moderating examinations and assessment processes.

Lead regular departmental meetings, set agenda, and record the minutes of meeting, ensuring that it is shared with all the members of the department.

Maintain DSIB related documents and records.

Domains of Monitoring and Feedback

Monitor and analyse results of every assessment, internal or external, and collaboratively design interventions/action plans for progress and attainment.

Ensure high quality of professional development and training in the department.

Monitor learning gaps between year groups.

Design learning bridges as per need.

Monitor the quality of resources being uploaded on Phoenix.

Monitor lesson plans, support materials and curated resources for quality.

Ensure that no copyrights or Intellectual Property Rights are being violated.

Monitor the quality of feedback and target setting in notebooks.

Monitor and review exam papers for length, content, differentiation and presentation.

Observe lesson transactions, give feedback to colleagues, ensure that areas of improvement are being addressed.

Domains of communication

Connect with the Senior Leadership Team: share the minutes of HOD/ Department meetings and action plans, seek feedback and implement the same.

Collaborate with the line manager for support for subject enrichment for the members of the department.

Communicate with parents, as necessary.

Keep alive inter-departmental bridges to plan theme teaching, etc.

Domain of Curation of Resources and Planning

Construct the department Development Plan.

Prepare the departmental SEF to plan progress.

Integrate 21st century skills, subject specific skills and PSED skills in all planning.

Curate various resources for academic purposes, always checking credibility of source.

Prepare specifications and budgets for acquiring teaching tools and for co-curricular activities like plays, elocution, dress-up day, etc.

Ensure the maintenance of equipment related to the Department at School.

Ensure access to such equipment and other teaching resources.

Manage book orders: Check annual textbook order before submission.

Responsibilities and expectations may be modified and communicated with due notice.
