Job Summary

Marsh is the world\xe2\x80\x99s leading Insurance Broker, providing Risk Engineering services across the globe, for clients in all sectors, from commercial property to conventional power and renewables, through to oil and gas exploration, refining and downstream petrochemicals. Job Title Property Risk Engineer (Assistant Vice President Grade) Reports to Senior Risk Engineer, Property Risk Consulting Team

General Summary

The role will be heavily client facing and will require a great deal of flexibility around the facilities visited. It will involve travel within the region to survey client\xe2\x80\x99s commercial property assets, producing risk assessments, loss estimates and conducting training and benchmarking exercises. Commercial Property includes but is not limited to:
  • High Rise Buildings
  • Airports & Sea Ports
  • Malls & Sports Stadiums
  • Cultural Heritage Buildings (museums etc.)
The main purpose of these assessments is twofold:
  • To share information and offer an expert opinion to Insurers as to the risk profile of a facility
  • To advise the client on suitable risk mitigation measures to improve the risk profile of the site
If a Risk Engineer is found with the right experience this role will also expand to servicing some power, water treatment and energy clients. The role offers the opportunity to interact with senior client staff in Risk Management, Operations and Engineering functions. The ability to communicate to all organisational levels is a critical competency. This is a consultancy role and therefore the ability to promote Marsh Engineering services and develop new business would be a sought-after capability. For newly recruited Risk Engineers, Marsh offers a training and development programme with both on the job and classroom training. Location Candidates for the United Arab Emirates are sought (Abu Dhabi or Dubai)
  • Candidates who wish to be based in KSA will also be considered.

Scope of Activities

Main Responsibilities

  • Standard risk engineering surveys: This is the base offering of Marsh Risk Engineering, and it is crucial to successful placement of insurance within the commercial property industry. A survey consists of a typically 2-day visit to a client facility, interviews with key management teams and site tours. The output is an engineering report which details;
    • Description of the site e.g. construction, occupancies, exposures.
    • An analysis of Loss Prevention/Mitigation features (Fire/ Flood protection features)
    • A ranking of the quality of the site and recommendations for improvement
    • Property damage loss estimations based on technical standards and guidelines (analysis of fire spread and control)
  • The role will also involve carrying out risk assessments of Commercial Property and reviews of new projects for Marsh\'s clients (If experience is relevant).
  • The position will also support the Broking team in placing risks in international insurance markets.
In addition, the role will include the following responsibilities:
  • Manage and develop Risk Engineering Management System.
  • Makes recommendations on design of research & analysis plan, manages research, data collection and documentation and conducts more complex research & analysis of clients risks to provide guidance to clients
  • Creates presentations/slides and other communications of high complexity and extracts and summarizes key insights for presentations/communications that drive internal and client meetings
  • Drives client and internal meetings to drive client projects
  • Develops pricing for projects, supports the development of proposals and reviews technical concept working with consulting management to improve efficiency
  • Advises clients in developing and adjusting project approaches, methodology, and tools to support risk programs and initiatives.
  • Builds and nurtures successful business/working relationships with clients to grow the books.
  • Be up- to- date on industry trends around risk management to understand client\'s business environment and basic risk management environment better
  • Begins to lead small projects.

Required Skills

  • Sound working knowledge of commercial property standards (building codes, fire testing, NFPA standards, FM Datasheets), understanding of business risk and ability to communicate clearly that risk to the client.
  • Exposure to risk assessed driven decision-making is essential - relevant to field of expertise.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to all organizational layers & ability to be autonomous in the role, taking responsibility in delivering for clients and developing the business in the region.
  • IT literacy to include general office systems such as Word, Excel, Power Point (or similar). Experience of technical simulation packages for fire modelling, risk assessment, project execution purposes as is relevant to field of expertise.
  • Enhanced written and verbal communication skills (ability to write detailed engineering reports in English).

  • Articulate internal and external business goals and overall strategies needed to attain these goals.
  • Complies with and checks performance against professional standards and best practices.
Client development
  • Develops new and expanded business opportunities.
  • Utilize and develop spheres of influence to develop new and expanded business.

Candidates Profile

Work Experience (one or more of the following)
  • 5 years\' experience within industry in one or more of the following:
    • In a Risk Engineering role or a role where risk assessment and risk management are core to the role.
    • Experience in Mechanical or Civil Engineering within a Risk Management Team
    • Experience in working in a high hazard industry where risk management and risk control are critical (e.g. refining, petrochemical, power plants etc.)
    • Experience in fire engineering (fire spread, active and passive fire control systems) would be advantageous. Sprinkler & Fire system design experience is not required but desirable
Academic Background
  • Master of Engineering in Civil or Mechanical
  • Chartership with relevant institution is not essential but is preferred
  • CFPS (Chartered Fire Protection Specialist)
Physical Requirements
  • Combination of Middle East (majority) and world-wide travel required (typically 70-90 days per year).
Other desired skills and experience
  • Develops and maintains client relationships.
  • Experience in the Insurance industry would be beneficial but not essential
  • Proficient in company sanctioned software and systems, as well as relevant use of Internet.
  • Proficient in English language (speaking, reading and writing)
  • Exposure to industries such as Power, Utilities etc is a significant benefit
  • Additional language skills from region + Europe (Arabic, French, German, Hindi etc.) are not required but beneficial.
