Chiller Technician
Job Title: Chiller Technician
Department: Maintenance / MEP
Reporting To: MEP Manager / Chief Engineer
Job Purpose:
A specialized role focused on the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of industrial and commercial central chilling plants and systems, which are critical for large-scale air conditioning and process cooling.
Key Responsibilities:

• Perform planned and preventative maintenance (PPM) on various types of chillers (centrifugal, screw, scroll, absorption).
• Conduct complex diagnostics and troubleshooting of chiller control systems, refrigerant circuits, and hydronic systems.
• Repair and overhaul major chiller components, including compressors, motors, condensers, evaporators, and control panels.
• Analyze system operation using building management systems (BMS) and specialized diagnostic software.
• Perform water treatment testing and chemical dosing for cooling towers and condenser water loops.
• Recover, evacuate, charge, and leak-test refrigerant circuits in compliance with environmental regulations.
• Respond to emergency breakdowns and perform corrective repairs to minimize downtime.
• Maintain detailed service reports and logs.

Qualifications and Experience:

• High School Diploma or equivalent; technical certification in HVAC/R is highly preferred.
• EPA Section 608 Universal Certification is mandatory.
• Extensive and proven experience specifically working on large tonnage chillers.
• Manufacturer-specific training (e.g., Trane, Carrier, York) is a significant advantage.

Skills and Competencies:

• Expert-level knowledge of chiller mechanics, refrigeration theory, and control logic.
• Advanced electrical and mechanical diagnostic skills.
• Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, schematics, and ladder logic diagrams.
• Proficiency in using advanced tools like vibration analyzers, megohmmeters, and combustion analyzers.

Working Conditions:

• Primarily work in central plant rooms, which can be noisy and hot.
• Requires handling heavy components and working with high-voltage electricity and high-pressure systems.
