Job Description

Job Title: Archaeology Conservator Sector: Culture Department: Culture Planning and Development Section: Collections Reports to: Collections Conservations Unit Head.

Job Purpose: To carry out conservation and preventive conservation on the archaeological materials and support conservation works at archeological sites across the collections under the ownership or care of the DCT and ensure quality control of outsourced conservation activities.

Key Accountabilities: Conservation Operations Preventive conservation Implement best practices and appropriate conservation standards, working closely with engineers, conservation and security to establish technical specifications regarding climate, lighting, and security systems in order to assure safe venues for archaeological remains. Review and approve policies and procedures on Integrated Pest Management and design a conservation response to infestations by determining and guiding the Conservators on pest eradication methods, environmental monitoring and mould management. Input into maintenance, cleaning and other external contract specifications which relate to the preventive conservation strategy as required. Work with the Logistics Manager and Registrar in planning, arranging, and recording all shipping details to and from the Department for assigned archaeological and natural history objects / collections including but not limited to: crate building, packing, freight forwarding, and travel arrangements for couriers. Collections Establish and implement conservation guidelines and standards of practice based on current ethics and principles to ensure a holistic approach to collection care and access within allocated resources.

Advice the curatorial division on artefacts/artwork treatment options and alternatives for exhibitions/loans. Make recommendations on improvements in collection display methods for all curatorial programmes, assessing and providing inputs on the maintenance of collections storage facilities. Implement documentation and knowledge management processes to ensure that all conservation documentation is well-captured. Ensure conservation of archaeological remains from terrestrial or marine environments collections. Oversee and/or manage departmental archaeological conservation projects including assessment and treatment of the collections; establish priorities for future conservation and treatment campaigns. Identify, manage and execute extensive interventive conservation projects and treatments. Identify conservation work to be outsourced and commissioned; manage and control quality of outsourced work. Reports & Database Produce reports of all conservation works (pre-acquisition, condition, treatment, outgoing loan, incoming loan reports) and ensure availability of said reports for use by all units / individuals involved in the handling of art works, whether owned or borrowed. Reporting on the condition of all assigned exhibition artefacts prior to and immediately after display, whether owned or borrowed collections. Maintain inspection databases with all records and reports are up-to-date for management review and to support DCT decision making process.

Policies, Processes and Procedures Follow all Collections section policies, processes, procedures and instructions so that work is carried out in a controlled and consistent manner. Support Collections & Conservation teams to review current and set new policies, standards and procedures.

Collaboration Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders on matters related to Archaeology Conservation area in order to facilitate flow of information and also to build awareness in those areas.

Day-to-Day Operations Follow the day-to-day operations set by the Line Manager in the Conservation Unit to ensure continuity of work and the delivery of effective and high quality outputs. Report on a regular basis to Senior Conservator Unit Head on the operational activities, challenges, hurdles and methods of resolution or mitigation etc. as required to keep the Line Manager informed and updated about their activities.

EHS (Environment, Health and Safety) Comply with all relevant EHS guidelines, policies and procedures, by reporting incidents and hazards on a timely manner, and reduce consumption of natural resources to support in protecting the environment and ensure a healthy and safe work environment.

Change Management Support the creation of culture susceptible to change management through a 'hands-on' and 'can-do' approach to DCT's new business opportunities, participating in the development of new initiatives, meeting planned targets, and demonstrating preferred high-performance behaviors.

Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Conservation, Art, Archaeology or equivalent is required. · Master's Degree in Conservation is preferred for Bachelor's Degree in Conservation holders. · Master's Degree in Conservation is required for no Bachelor's Degree in Conservation holders.

Experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in Archaeology and Objects Conservation practical work including complex conservation treatments, supervising junior conservators and managing projects (e.g. exhibitions, loans).
