Job Description

Supervise and coordinate the daily activities of workers involved in waste handling, sorting, and storage. Oversee the proper unloading, sorting, and storing of waste materials in designated areas (e.g., hazardous waste, recyclable materials, general waste). Ensure that the yard is organized and that materials are stored safely and according to local and environmental regulations. Supervise yard staff, ensuring that they are following safety protocols, proper waste handling procedures, and operating equipment correctly. Provide on-the-job training to staff regarding the safe handling of waste, equipment operation, and emergency procedures. Assign tasks to yard personnel based on workload and operational needs. Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations at all times, including local, state, and federal laws. Conduct safety checks and monitor adherence to safety procedures in the yard, ensuring that all personal protective equipment (PPE) is being used appropriately. Identify potential hazards in the yard and take appropriate actions to mitigate risk, such as maintaining clear signage, enforcing speed limits, and ensuring proper waste containment. Conduct regular safety meetings and inspections to reinforce safe work practices. Oversee the maintenance and operation of yard equipment, such as forklifts, skid-steers, compactors, and waste trucks. Ensure that equipment is regularly inspected, maintained, and repaired as needed to prevent downtime or safety issues. Monitor inventory of equipment and tools to ensure there are no shortages and that all necessary resources are available for operations. Ensure proper segregation and sorting of waste materials based on types (e.g., recyclables, non-recyclables, hazardous waste). Supervise the safe loading and unloading of waste trucks and containers. Maintain accurate records of materials processed and monitor the flow of waste in and out of the yard. Maintain accurate logs of all waste processed, including quantities, types of materials, and disposal methods. Prepare reports on yard operations, safety compliance, and material handling for management or regulatory agencies. Track and manage inventory related to yard supplies, such as waste bins, PPE, and other equipment. Ensure that waste is handled and disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner, complying with environmental policies and standards. Support efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste wherever possible. Monitor for contamination in recycling or waste streams and take corrective action as needed. Address any operational issues or conflicts among staff, ensuring that issues are resolved quickly and efficiently. Handle emergency situations, such as chemical spills or accidents, by following established procedures and coordinating with emergency response teams if necessary. Ensure waste disposal procedures are followed even in cases of equipment malfunction or other unexpected disruptions. Communicate with customers, waste haulers, or regulatory authorities regarding operational concerns or updates. Coordinate with drivers, drivers of waste trucks, or other contractors to ensure timely and efficient waste collection and disposal.
