Job Description

Position Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Welding Engineer to join our dynamic engineering team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing, qualifying, and optimizing welding procedures, ensuring the highest standards of quality and integrity in our welded products. You will provide technical expertise to resolve welding-related issues, support production, and drive continuous improvement in our manufacturing processes.
Key Responsibilities

  • Procedure Development & Qualification (WPS/PQR): Develop, qualify, and maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and Procedure Qualification Records (PQR) in accordance with relevant codes and standards (e.g., AWS D1.1, ASME Section IX, API, ISO).
  • Welder Qualification: Oversee the welder qualification process, including the creation of Welder Qualification Test Records (WQTR) and maintaining certifications.
  • Technical Support & Troubleshooting: Provide daily technical support to production welders and fabrication teams. Investigate and resolve welding defects such as porosity, cracking, and lack of fusion. Recommend and implement corrective actions.
  • Process Optimization: Analyze existing welding processes and recommend improvements to enhance productivity, reduce costs, improve quality, and ensure repeatability. This includes evaluating new technologies (e.g., automation, robotics, new filler metals).
  • Quality Assurance & NDT Collaboration: Work closely with Quality Assurance and NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) personnel to establish acceptance criteria, review inspection results, and ensure product conformity.
  • Material Selection & Review: Provide expertise on weldability of materials, including carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and high-alloy metals. Review project specifications and requirements.
  • Project Management: Manage welding-related projects from conception through implementation, including budgeting, scheduling, and reporting.
  • Training & Development: Develop and deliver training programs for welders, inspectors, and other engineers on welding processes, procedures, and best practices.
  • Documentation & Compliance: Ensure all welding activities comply with company policies, customer specifications, and industry safety standards (OSHA). Maintain accurate and thorough documentation.
Qualifications & Skills
Required:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of [3-5] years of experience in a welding engineering or similar role in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of common welding processes (SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, SAW) and their applications.
  • Strong understanding of metallurgy, weldability of metals, and heat treatment processes.
  • Proven experience qualifying procedures to ASME Section IX and/or AWS D1.1.
  • Proficiency in interpreting engineering drawings, welding symbols, and codes.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
Preferred:
  • Master's degree in Welding Engineering or a related field.
  • Certified Welding Engineer (CWEng) or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) certification from the American Welding Society (AWS).
  • Experience with automated and robotic welding systems.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD).
  • Familiarity with NDT methods (VT, PT, MT, RT, UT).
  • Experience in the [specific industry, e.g., aerospace, pressure vessel, pipeline] industry.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment, including exposure to noise, fumes, and varying temperatures.
  • Ability to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
  • Must have sufficient visual acuity to perform visual inspections of welds.
