Job Summary
The 4G Welder is responsible for performing high-quality welding in the 4G (overhead) position on various metal structures, components, and equipment, primarily for the repair, maintenance, and fabrication related to the shipping and logistics industry. This includes, but is not limited to, containers, trailers, heavy equipment, and structural elements of the facility.
Key Responsibilities
Welding and Fabrication:
Perform welding in the 4G (overhead) position and other positions (1G, 2G, 3G) using various welding processes, commonly SMAW (Stick/Arc), MIG (GMAW), or FCAW (Flux-Cored Arc Welding), on mild steel, stainless steel, and potentially aluminum.
Reading Blueprints:
Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and welding procedure specifications (WPS) to determine the layout, dimensions, and welding requirements.
Preparation and Fitting:
Prepare materials for welding by cutting, grinding, cleaning, and fitting metal components to ensure proper alignment and joint configuration.
Repair and Maintenance:
Execute repair and maintenance welding on damaged shipping containers, chassis, trailers, truck components, and other heavy equipment.
Quality Control:
Inspect completed welds for defects (e.g., porosity, cracks, undercut) and ensure all work meets required quality standards, codes, and specifications (e.g., AWS, API, or company-specific standards).
Equipment Operation:
Safely operate and maintain welding machines, cutting equipment (e.g., plasma, oxy-acetylene), grinders, and other tools.
Safety Compliance:
Adhere strictly to all company and industry safety procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and maintaining a clean and organized work area.
Team Collaboration:
Coordinate with fabricators, fitters, supervisors, and other trades to ensure projects are completed on schedule.
Required Qualifications and Skills
Welding Certification:
Must hold a valid 4G welding certification (or equivalent) in a relevant welding process (SMAW, MIG, or FCAW). Shipyard/Marine certifications (like IACS) may be highly preferred.
Experience:
Proven experience (typically 2-5+ years) as a Welder, with demonstrated proficiency in the 4G position, preferably in a heavy fabrication, construction, shipyard, or industrial environment
