Testing and Commissioning Protection Engineer (TAQA Competent Engineer)
Job Summary
The Testing and Commissioning Protection Engineer is responsible for testing, commissioning, and validating protection and control systems for substations, power plants, and transmission networks. The role ensures protection schemes operate safely, reliably, and in full compliance with TAQA standards, grid codes, and international best practices.
Identify risks and implement mitigation during testing activities
Support audits, inspections, and site acceptance tests (SAT)
Coordination & Support
Coordinate with:
SCADA / Automation teams
Substation construction and commissioning teams
Grid operations and control rooms
Support fault analysis and post-commissioning troubleshooting
Provide technical guidance to junior engineers and technicians
Qualifications & ExperienceEducation
Bachelor's Degree in
Electrical Engineering
or equivalent
Experience
Minimum
5-8 years
experience in protection testing & commissioning
Proven experience in:
HV / EHV substations
Power plants or transmission networks
Experience working with utilities or EPC projects is preferred
Competency & Certification
TAQA Competent Engineer
(mandatory)
Familiar with protection relay brands such as:
Siemens
ABB / Hitachi Energy
GE
Schneider
SEL
Knowledge of protection testing tools (OMICRON, Megger, etc.)
Technical Skills
Strong understanding of:
Protection coordination
Fault calculations
Power system behavior
Proficient in relay setting software
Ability to interpret technical drawings and logic diagrams
Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills
Soft Skills
Strong communication and coordination skills
High attention to detail
Ability to work under pressure during outages and energization
