Job Purpose

Optical Technical Specialist at Imaging and Characterization Core Lab, specialized in histology and optical microscopy.

Major Accountabilities

Support scientific research related to the use of optical microscopy hardware. Participate in the organization, planning and optimization of optical microscopy services.
Take care of tasks related to the set-up, maintenance, operation, handling and control of the optical microscopy tools.
Perform standardized protocols for histology.
Provide optical microscope training and services to users.
Handle and prepare biological specimens for optical microscopy techniques. Collaborate with end-users to optimize sample preparation workflow for optical microscopy contrast techniques including brightfield, darkfield, fluorescence, DIC, phase, and polarized light microscopy.
Maintain the optical microscopy Bio-preparation lab.
Assist users in the post-acquisition analysis and processing of image data.
Engage in KAUST research projects with senior staff to provide value-added service
Ensure maintenance status and maximum uptime of assigned instruments (plan, perform and oversee preventative and corrective maintenance, purchase consumables, etc.)
Perform routine laboratory duties and maintenance, including administrative, procurement, serve on task forces.
Perform routine laboratory safety inspection and correct deficiencies, when found.
Ensure good laboratory practice in the assigned work area at all times.
Other duties as assigned by the team lead and lab director.

Person Requirements

Competencies

Good knowledge of optical microscopy techniques, cell biology and cell structure
General understanding and expertise in cell/tissue fixation, processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining.
Ability to work in a team with staff and students. Willing to work in a service environment.
Hands-on experience on microtome, cryostat, tissue processor, cell sample preparation
Working experience with cell culture.
Hands-on experience on wide-field optical microscopes.
Hands-on experience on confocal microscope is preferred.
Good communication and inter-personal skills.

Qualifications

Master’s degree in the life science or biochemistry-related field

Experience

Experience working in a laboratory environment showing a good familiarity with lab procedures and safety precautions.
