Job Purpose
Storage and Backup Engineer will be part of a talented team of engineers that demonstrate superb technical competency, delivering mission critical infrastructure and ensuring the highest levels of availability, performance and security. Qualified Storage and Backup engineers will have a background in IT, computer systems engineering, Storage Tiering and Data Protection engineering and analysis.
Principal Accountabilities
Strategy/Governance

• Ensure the timely provision of data and reports to "Storage & Backup Team Lead", recommend Storage and Backup operational improvements to support planning, vision and decision making to have continuous improvement of IT infrastructure services.
• Responsible for coordinating the construction, maintenance, and expansion of an organization's Storage and Data Protection systems.
• Collaborate with IT Infrastructure staff to ensure smooth and reliable operations of software and systems for fulfilling business objectives and processes.

Operational

• To gather requirements to facilitate proper designs, return customer infrastructure to service, identify, test, and select new technologies, adjust/maintain standards of existing technologies and products, maintain storage & Backup related technologies, and assist with requirements gathering for proper design/installations.
• Primary responsibilities include both Internal and Customer facing storage & Backup infrastructure which includes, but is not limited to, technologies from HP (MSA, EVA, and XP Series), EMC (Clariion, Atmos, and Symmetrix/VMAX Series), 3Par (F, S, and T Series), NetApp NAS/SAN, Equallogic iSCSI, Cisco/Brocade/McData Fiber Switches, also backup and data protection solutions like CommVault, Tivoli Storage Manager TSM, HP Data Protect, VEAM.
• Must be able to understand, follow and repeat documented procedures related to various maintenance activities.
• Certain maintenance activities will require this role to be available after-hours.
• To interface with front-end Engineers on level 3 issues, keep apprised of patches, latest technologies, and upcoming infrastructure installations.
• Provide Capacity, Configuration, Performance and Availability management services for all storage and Data Protection related technologies/infrastructure.
• Work Storage & Backup related customer consultations as required.
• Respond to, and update on projects or tickets assigned through internal systems with complete notes, milestones, and estimated time of completion.
• Create knowledge base articles that can be used by tier one support engineers in response to routine incidents.
• Engineer and maintain storage & Backup environment characteristics, including: physical array characteristics, logical disk layout, standard configurations, storage network and implement and maintain the company Backup and Data Protection Policy,
• Serve as third tier escalation for incidents or problems in customer environments that could be related to the storage and Data Backup environment.
• Manage advanced data protection functions such as replication, cloning and snapshots as required by the customer.
• Establish and periodically monitor billing exports.

Additional Principal Accountabilities

• Analyze capacity and performance for all storage infrastructure to ensure availability growth and readiness for new customers.
• Install, configure, test and maintain operating systems, application software and system management tools
• Proactively ensure the highest levels of Storage and Data Backup availability
• Monitor and test Storage and Backup systems performance for potential bottlenecks, identify possible solutions, and work with developers to implement those fixes
• Maintain security, backup, and redundancy strategies
• Write and maintain custom scripts to increase system efficiency and lower the human intervention time on any tasks
• Participate in the design of information and operational support systems
• Provide 2nd and 3rd level support

Liaise with vendors and other IT personnel for problem resolution related to Storage and Backup domain.

• Oversee the development and installation of new hardware and software
• Provide technical direction to IT support staff
• Ensure constant availability of technical resources
• Design and implement security systems and redundant backups to maintain data safety
• Write custom scripts to reduce the need for human intervention

Experience

• Degree: Minimum Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or Business field or equivalent
• Required professional certifications: Industry certification in IT infrastructure (e.g. AWS, CompTIA, DCDC, MCSE, etc) and project management (e.g. PRINCE II, PMP, etc)
• Preferred professional certifications: ITIL v4
• Solid understanding of Systems and Systems security concept and requirements
• Knowledge of Symantec NetBackup, Commvault Simpana and similar backup technologies
• Knowledge of Enterprise storage systems from EMC, NetApp, NDS and similar systems
• Experience with Enterprise data protection and disaster recover solution, and understand Enterprise application data management requirements
