Staff Nurse - OPD
Job Title: Staff Nurse - Outpatient Department (OPD)
Reports To: OPD In-charge / Nursing Superintendent
Department: Outpatient Department (OPD)
1. Job Summary
The Staff Nurse in the OPD is a registered professional responsible for providing comprehensive and independent nursing care to patients. This role involves direct patient assessment, nursing interventions, patient education, and coordination of care. The Staff Nurse acts as a crucial link between the patient, their family, and the physicians, ensuring a seamless, safe, and therapeutic experience throughout the patient's OPD visit.
2. Key Responsibilities
A. Clinical Nursing Care:

• Perform thorough initial nursing assessment of patients, including taking detailed patient history and vital signs.
• Triage patients based on their condition to prioritize care and identify emergencies.
• Assist physicians with various diagnostic and therapeutic procedures (e.g., wound dressing, suturing, injections, ear syringing, ECGs).
• Administer medications (oral, IV, IM) as prescribed by the physician, adhering to the "5 Rights" of medication administration.
• Perform specialized nursing procedures as per hospital protocols and scope of practice.
• Monitor patient's condition and response to treatment, reporting any changes or concerns to the physician immediately.

B. Patient & Family Education:

• Provide detailed and clear education to patients and their families regarding their disease, treatment plan, medication, and lifestyle modifications.
• Offer pre-and post-procedure instructions and ensure patient understanding.
• Counsel patients on health promotion and disease prevention.

C. Coordination & Administration:

• Coordinate patient flow within the OPD, ensuring efficient movement from registration to consultation, diagnostics, and pharmacy.
• Manage and supervise the work of Assistant Nurses and other support staff in the OPD.
• Maintain accurate, concise, and timely nursing documentation and records.
• Handle patient-related inquiries and resolve issues promptly and professionally.
• Ensure all patient charges for procedures and consumables are accurately captured and documented.

D. Management of Clinical Area:

• Take responsibility for the inventory of drugs, medical supplies, and equipment in the OPD.
• Ensure all medical equipment is functional, calibrated, and properly stored. Report malfunctions promptly.
• Maintain strict infection control standards, including sterilization of instruments and supervision of environmental cleanliness.
• Ensure emergency crash carts and emergency equipment are always stocked and ready for use.

E. Professional Development:

• Stay updated with the latest nursing practices, protocols, and hospital policies.
• Participate in nursing audits, training sessions, and quality improvement initiatives.

3. Qualifications and Competencies

• Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (

Nursing) or Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM). * Registration: Must be registered with the respective State Nursing Council.

• Experience: 2+ years of experience in a hospital setting, with OPD experience being highly desirable.
• Skills:
• Excellent clinical knowledge and nursing skills.
• Strong patient assessment and triage skills.
• Proficiency in performing nursing procedures independently.
• Outstanding communication, counseling, and interpersonal skills.
• Leadership qualities and the ability to supervise a team.
• Ability to work efficiently under pressure and manage multiple tasks.
• Sound knowledge of infection control protocols and medical documentation.
• Basic to intermediate computer proficiency for documentation and reporting.
