Job Summary
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer - Combustion Systems will lead the design, integration, and lifecycle support of combustor components within state-of-the-art turbofan propulsion systems. This role is responsible for developing robust, efficient, and manufacturable combustor hardware, including liners, domes, fuel injectors, cases, and thermal shielding systems. Working closely with aerothermal, materials, and structural teams, this position ensures combustor integrity, compliance with emissions standards, and seamless integration into the engine core.
Key Responsibilities
Mechanical Design & Development
Lead mechanical design of combustor components, including liners, fuel injectors, domes, shielding, and cases.
Develop 3D CAD models and 2D drawings using CATIA or NX.
Ensure designs withstand high thermal loads, vibration, and pressure environments.
Structural & Thermal Analysis Integration
Collaborate with analysts to optimize thermal stresses, creep, and fatigue performance.
Support design trades balancing emissions, manufacturability, and durability.
Manufacturing & Integration
Drive Design for Manufacturability (DFM) for welded, brazed, cast, and sheet metal assemblies.
Collaborate with suppliers on producibility, tooling, and assembly solutions.
Support test rig builds and full engine assembly reviews.
Documentation & Certification
Prepare detailed engineering documentation including assembly drawings, tolerance stack-ups, and certification reports.
Support FAA, EASA, and military authority certification processes.
Deliver technical review packages (PDR, CDR).
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work with combustion aerothermal, materials, fuel systems, and validation teams.
Participate in root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Innovation & Technology Development
Contribute to low-emissions and lean-burn combustor architectures.
Investigate novel cooling, advanced materials, and additive manufacturing solutions.
Apply lessons learned across programs for improved performance and durability.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering required; Master's degree preferred (focus on combustion, hot-section systems, or turbomachinery).
7-10 years of proven experience in mechanical design of combustor or hot-section components.
Full lifecycle exposure: concept, design, validation, certification, and field support.
Proficiency in CAD (CATIA, NX) and familiarity with FEA (ANSYS, Abaqus).
Knowledge of high-temperature alloys, coatings, GD&T, stack-up analysis, and configuration control.
Strong understanding of FAA/EASA certification standards.
Preferred
Experience with lean-burn or variable geometry combustors.
Familiarity with combustion rig testing and instrumentation.
Knowledge of additive manufacturing for liners or injector components.
Exposure to model-based design or digital twin integration.
Personal Attributes
Strong mechanical intuition and problem-solving ability.
Detail-oriented with sound engineering judgment.
Collaborative team player with excellent communication skills.
Proactive, results-driven, and adaptable in fast-paced environments.
Passionate about innovation, safety, and advancing propulsion technologies.
