Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Electrical Engineer specializing in substation design to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be responsible for leading the design, analysis, and project management of high-voltage electrical substation projects (typically 34.5kV to 500kV). The ideal candidate will possess deep technical expertise, demonstrate strong leadership capabilities, and have a proven track record of delivering complex projects on time and within budget.
Key Responsibilities

• Technical Design & Engineering:
• Lead the conceptual and detailed design of air-insulated (AIS) and gas-insulated (GIS) substations, including physical layout, equipment specifications, and electrical studies.
• Create and review one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, and relay panel layouts.
• Develop project specifications for major substation equipment (power transformers, circuit breakers, switchgear, CTs/VTs, surge arresters, etc.).
• Perform and review electrical calculations (short-circuit, load flow, relay coordination, arc flash, grounding grid design, cable ampacity).
• Ensure all designs comply with industry standards (NESC, NEC, IEEE, NERC) and client-specific requirements.
• Project & Team Leadership:
• Act as the Lead Engineer or Project Manager on medium to large-scale substation projects.
• Manage project scope, schedule, budget, and quality.
• Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and oversight to junior engineers and designers.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams (civil/structural engineers, protection & control engineers, drafters).
• Client & Stakeholder Management:
• Serve as a primary technical point of contact for clients, vendors, and contractors.
• Lead project meetings and present design reviews to internal and external stakeholders.
• Prepare and review technical reports, proposals, and cost estimates.
• Quality Assurance & Continuous Improvement:
• Conduct thorough quality control (QC) reviews of design packages and engineering calculations.
• Stay current with industry trends, technologies, and standards.
• Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and quality.

Qualifications & Experience
Required:

• Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
• Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in the physical design of high-voltage electrical substations.
• Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is required.
• Proven experience as a lead engineer on utility-scale substation projects (>69kV).
• Expert knowledge of industry standards (NESC, IEEE, NEC).
• Proficiency with engineering software tools such as ASPEN, ETAP, SKM, CDEGS, or similar.
• Strong proficiency with AutoCAD and/or Bentley MicroStation.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to lead a team and manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Preferred:

• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems focus).
• Experience with EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) projects.
• Familiarity with BIM (Building Information Modeling) processes.
• Knowledge of NERC compliance standards (e.g., FAC-008, PRC-005, etc.).
• Construction and field support experience.
