Position Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Distribution Engineer to play a key role in our engineering department. In this position, you will be responsible for the planning, design, analysis, and project management of overhead and underground electrical distribution systems. You will provide technical leadership, mentor junior engineers, and ensure that all projects meet regulatory standards, reliability goals, and budgetary constraints. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of distribution systems and a proven track record of successful project execution.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Design & Analysis:

• Perform and lead the planning, design, and analysis of overhead and underground distribution lines (4kV to 35kV).
• Develop detailed construction packages including drawings, specifications, and material lists.
• Conduct and review load flow, voltage drop, fault current, and protection coordination studies using software such as CYMDIST, Synergi Electric, or WindMil.
• Specify and select distribution equipment (transformers, regulators, capacitors, switchgear, reclosers, etc.).
• Ensure all designs comply with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), IEEE standards, and company standards.

Project Management:

• Manage multiple distribution projects from conception to completion, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget.
• Develop project scopes, schedules, and cost estimates.
• Coordinate with internal teams (construction, operations, planning) and external stakeholders (customers, government agencies, contractors).
• Provide technical support during construction and respond to field inquiries.

Leadership & Mentorship:

• Provide guidance, training, and technical oversight to junior engineers and designers.
• Review and approve engineering calculations, designs, and plans prepared by others.
• Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) on distribution engineering matters.

Reliability & Grid Modernization:

• Identify and develop projects to improve system reliability, resilience, and capacity (e.g., automation, reconductoring, circuit relocation).
• Analyze outage data to recommend and prioritize capital improvement projects.
• Support the integration of distributed energy resources (DER) like solar, wind, and energy storage into the distribution grid.

Stakeholder Engagement:

• Collaborate with customers, developers, and government entities to determine power requirements and facilitate new connections.
• Prepare and present technical reports and project proposals to management and regulators.

Qualifications & Experience
Required:

• Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution.
• A minimum of 8+ years of progressive experience in the design and planning of electrical distribution systems.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license is strongly preferred.
• Proven expertise in applying the NESC, IEEE standards, and utility best practices.
• Proficiency with distribution design and analysis software (e.g., CYMDIST, Synergi Electric, WindMil, PoleForeman, SPIDAcalc).
• Strong project management skills and experience managing complex technical projects.
• Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and decision-making abilities.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred:

• Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• Experience with GIS systems (e.g., ArcGIS, Smallworld).
• Knowledge of CAD drafting principles (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation).
• Experience with grid modernization technologies (AMI, FLISR, DERMS).
• Previous experience in a utility setting.
