  • As School Nurse you will be primarily responsible to the School Doctor with a dotted line to the Principal for ensuring the safe and efficient operations of the medical clinics in the school.
Job Purpose:
  • To operate efficiently (doing it right) & effectively (doing the right thing) the medical clinics of the school to ensure the students and staff are safe and able to learn and work effectively.
Role Responsibilities Key Responsibility 1: Lead, Support and Advise
  • Advise on all medical issues and clinic compliance, as required.
  • Ensure an effective clinic policy is implemented, put into practice at all times and is subject to review and assessment at regular intervals or as situations change;
  • Advise on key policies supporting smooth and safe operations.
  • Advise on and support all medical and clinic licence renewals to ensure smooth opening and continuance of the school.
  • Advise on medical service contracts and monitor their implementation to ensure safe practices are maintained.
  • Support the implementation of health and safety policies, achieve medical objectives, avoid personal injury so far as is reasonably practicable by participating in a structured risk assessment programme;
  • Advise on, support and monitor medical matters related to school field trips and events;
  • Keep abreast of changes in local legislation or guidance and advise on the implications of these in maintaining the compliant and safe operation of the clinics;
  • Source additional specialist medical advice and assistance when necessary.
Key Responsibility 2: Maintaining a safe school and clinic
  • Support the maintenance of a medically safe school environment for the stakeholders of the school so that amazing learning can be provided throughout the school;
  • Support the creation of Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans for staff and students of determination that need them;
  • Support the creation of Medical Support Plans for staff and students with life threatening medical conditions and ensure these are effectively communicated to all those who need the information;
  • Monitor clinic ancillary services e.g. cleaning, maintenance, waste disposal, etc., to ensure the delivery of safe standards of health care;
  • Ensure the safe storage and control of all medical equipment and medicines used within the clinic and make sure that such materials are appropriately labeled, disposed of and replenished when required;
  • Effectively treat all injuries or illnesses sustained by a person on school premises or participating in school activities. Report and record these as per school policy and actively participate in subsequent investigations into such accidents and incidents
  • Work with colleagues to:
o Observe and report students with unhealthy or unsafe practices; o Refer promptly, students who are showing signs of visual, hearing and learning difficulties; o Refer students with fevers, rashes or unusual behaviour; o Report the presence of potential hazards throughout the school; o Motivate students to choose healthier lifestyle choices; o Report unsanitary and unsafe practices to the school administration; Key Responsibility 3: Ensure medical health and safety AND compliance within local/regional regulations
  • Act as a point of contact for medical related matters with local & regional authorities e.g. MOHAP & MOE;
  • Ensure the clinic policy, procedures and practices adhere to local & regional compliance requirements;
  • Take action to resolve medical issues in a timely manner.
  • Support the creation of regular analytical reports of medical data and recommend any changes to the premises and practices these identify;
  • Plan and deliver health education programmes to students throughout the school and to parents as required;
  • Ensure the clinic information boards have accurate and age appropriate materials displayed on them to inform about current health concerns;
  • Offer medical advice and counselling to students, staff and parents;
  • Support school healthy food service programmes;
  • Maintain accurate and up to date health records and files for all students (especially those with chronic health conditions), to include the creation and maintenance of immunization records, as per school and MOHAP policy;
  • Provide effective nursing care and physical screening to students; assess students and implement first aid measures for students as needed;
  • Record daily treatment logs and medicine administration records, as per school policy;
  • Assume responsibility for appropriate medical assessment, planning, intervention, evaluation, and referral activities for all students. Inform parents and school management of a child\xe2\x80\x99s condition as per school policy;
  • Initiate emergency procedures for students and staff as required;
  • Monitor students who are frequently absent from school due to health-related problems and those who regularly come to the clinic, reporting concerns to school management for further action;
  • Maintain clinic equipment and medication (including all school and vehicle first aid kits) and assess the need for replenishing consumable supplies on a regular basis. Report to the school doctor in a timely manner when items need to be re-ordered;
  • Ensure all daily monitoring checklists and records are accurately maintained for the clinic and fridge temperatures and the oxygen cylinder and equipment;
  • Ensure clinic equipment is used, sterilized or disposed of appropriately as per manufacturer\xe2\x80\x99s guidelines;
  • Measure the height and weight of all students and calculate their BMI on an annual basis. Refer to the school doctor any students whose growth and development measurements show deviations from the norm;
  • Support eyesight, hearing, teeth and head lice checks for all students as per school and MOHAP requirements;
  • Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization
  • programmes, early detection, surveillance, and reporting of contagious diseases as per MOHAP guidance;
  • Consistently adhere to MOHAP and MOE regulations.
Key Responsibility 4: Lead and support staff
  • Support refresher training of first aid trained staff throughout the school as required;
  • Provide medical induction training to new staff working with children who have chronic medical conditions and conduct refresher training for existing staff as required;
  • Enable regular consultation with people on medical issues;
  • Provide medical guidance to staff;
  • Provide subject specific medical direction and guidance to HODs and school leadership;
  • Perform other related duties as required or assigned by the school management.
