Position Overview

KU is seeking an experienced & highly motivated Research Scientist to work on project entitled \xe2\x80\x9cMicroalgae as a Super Food, Energy Feedstock and Water Cleaner\xe2\x80\x9d

As part of the project, the researcher will have access to state-of-the-art research equipment and facilities at the Research Center at Khalifa University and will get an opportunity to work alongside researchers and graduate students from various backgrounds as part of a wider team.

Position Requirements
  • Expertise in Microalgae Biology: In-depth knowledge of microalgae biology, taxonomy, physiology, and ecology is crucial. Understanding their growth conditions, nutrient requirements, and metabolic processes is essential for successful research.
  • Research Skills: Strong research skills, including the ability to design and execute experiments, analyze data, and draw meaningful conclusions. Experience in working with various laboratory techniques, such as culturing microalgae, measuring growth rates, and conducting molecular analyses, is essential.
  • Bioprocess Engineering: Understanding the engineering aspects of microalgae cultivation is important. Knowledge of bioreactor design, optimization of growth conditions, and techniques for large-scale cultivation is valuable, especially if your research aims to produce biofuels, bioplastics, or other valuable compounds from microalgae.
  • Analytical Skills: Proficiency in using analytical instruments and techniques for characterizing microalgae, such as microscopy, flow cytometry, chromatography, spectrophotometry, and molecular biology tools.
  • Environmental Awareness: Microalgae research often intersects with environmental concerns. An understanding of the potential applications of microalgae in carbon capture, wastewater treatment, and sustainable production is important.
  • Data Analysis and Modeling: Ability to analyze complex datasets and potentially model the growth and metabolic processes of microalgae. Computational skills for data analysis and modeling are increasingly valuable in this field.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Microalgae research requires collaboration with experts from various fields, such as biologists, chemists, engineers, and environmental scientists. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are necessary for effective teamwork.
  • Publication and Presentation Skills: Research scientists are expected to publish their findings in scientific journals and present their work at conferences. Good writing skills and the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly are essential.
  • Innovation and Problem Solving: The ability to think creatively and address challenges in microalgae cultivation and applications is important. Research scientists often need to develop novel approaches to optimize growth, increase yield, or extract valuable compounds.

Candidate Profile

Essential Criteria
  • PhD from a reputable university top 200 QS or THE ranked University in chemical engineering, biology, microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or environmental science
  • At least one (1) year post-doctoral research experience and H-Index in SCOPUS/Google Scholar of at least 8
  • Expert level knowledge project subject area as evidenced by relevant publications and or patents
  • Track record of contributing to the writing of successful research grants
  • A willingness to contribute to a collaborative and supportive team culture
  • Excellent English language communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • The proven ability to lead work on multiple tasks with competing demands and deadlines.
  • Ability to train and mentor students and support fellow researchers
  • Highly developed reasoning and problem-solving skills
Desired Criteria
  • PhD from and/or experience working in a top 200 QS or THE ranked University
  • High impact first-author publications in top 10% journals in the relevant field
  • Experience leading competitive research grants as principal investigator or named co-investigator in the project team
