About the role
We are looking for a confident, assertive, and experienced senior lawyer, ideally already operating at a Head of Legal or General Counsel level at an international organisation, to join our legal team.

The successful candidate will have substantial experience gained in a mixture of private practice and in-house, with a focus on either commercial or construction law. You will have a proven track record of advising on complex legal matters, leading a legal team, managing their input to the high standard expected by the business, interfacing with Group Legal to ensure consistency with Group procedure and strategy, and helping to deliver an ethics and compliance programme locally, and managing the local insurance programme within the region. The ability to understand the business at a high level, which would enable you to best tailor the legal service, would be advantageous.

You will have a proven track record of leading a legal team. You will have the confidence to be viewed by your team as the “go-to” person when matters need to be escalated by your team. Hence you will need to gain their respect for the experience that you bring to the role. You will also be expected to manage the team from a well-being and development point of view. You will be responsible for coaching and mentoring the team, including developing a training programme for the team to ensure continuous development and improvement.

A proven track record of advising on legal matters across a range of jurisdictions is key to this role. Flexibility and dexterity are key components to this role, as is deep experience with civil law jurisdictions in the Middle East. Some travel will be required for this role. It will primarily consist of travel to South Asia and across the Middle East but is not fundamental to the role.

You will need to have excellent drafting, communication and negotiation skills, and have the ability to develop the same skills in your team. You will be a person who can work in a high-pressure environment, juggling and managing competing priorities, and very short deadlines.
Candidate Specification
To be successful in this role, you should demonstrate the following competencies
  • Managing a team of 4 lawyers, including being responsible for their work product, development, productivity, and well-being.
  • Being the “go-to” person to whom matters are escalated by the legal team.
  • Adviser to the regional leadership team and interfacing with the unit leadership team
  • Advising the regional leadership team on all legal issues pertaining to the region.
  • Influencing the unit senior leadership team on regional decisions that touch upon the units.
  • Responsible for consistent and high-quality legal advice in the region, delivery of ethics and compliance programmes to the region, and insurance.
  • Managing and leading investigations in the region.
  • Managing the insurance programme at a local level.
  • Leading on legal training in the region, and assisting with commercial training in the region.
  • Ensuring consistency of advice between the region and the Group.
  • Managing the continuous learning of the legal team to ensure they are equipped to deliver legal service to the highest possible standard.
  • Advising the business on fee claims and disputes, including insurance matters, which may include liaising with outside counsel and technical experts.
Knowledge, Experience, and Education
  • Experienced gained in both private practice with an international firm and in-house.
  • Currently operating at Head of Region or General Counsel level at an international organisation.
  • Currently responsible for a team of experienced lawyers.
  • Experience gained through having lived and worked in the Middle East.
  • Ability to communicate and advise members of a senior leadership team on legal issues, and contribute to discussions on strategy.
