Parsons is now hiring a Principal Geotechnical Engineer with a desire to work on infrastructure projects that change the fabric of our community. We need our Principal Engineers to be versatile, enthusiastic to work in highly flexible, team oriented environment and who have exceptional communication, analytical and management skills. In this role you will engage in geotechnical engineering works involving facilities such as bridges, roads, tunnels, infrastructure facilities, buildings, and other projects. The successful candidate performs a variety of engineering duties and may identify as sub-disciplines of Civil Engineering such as: structural, municipal/urban, water resources, materials and/or coastal engineering. Responsible for the development of engineering computations, material quantity take-offs, estimates, surveys and designs. Willingness to travel or relocate to supplier, client, or construction site locations is expected.

Responsibilities: The responsibilities include all tasks related to the preparation of geotechnical engineering deliverables including investigations, design, design review, independent checking and assessment. I nvestigations and surveys
  • Preparation of geotechnical tender documents (specifications, scope of work, BoQ, development of exploratory hole plan) and cost estimate.
  • Contract administration and managing execution of investigation/survey work.
  • Design consideration for in-situ and lab testing requirements and evaluating test data.
  • Reviewing /evaluating geotechnical data and factual geotechnical reports.
  • Preparation of Interpretative Reports.
  • Certification of contractor’s payment invoices.
Analysis, Design and Recommendations
  • Shallow and deep foundation design and recommendations for temporary and permanent structures.
  • Retaining walls and retaining structure design.
  • Slope stability analysis using Slope/W.
  • Road and Railway Embankment design.
  • Design of Earth Embankments for water and wastewater storage.
  • Sub-grade evaluation.
  • Voids and cavities.
  • Soil corrosivity & foundation protection.
  • Permeability and drainage.
  • Geotechnical Risk Assessment for small and large projects.
  • Application of Rock mass classification.
  • Preparation of geotechnical Design Basis Statements and providing design support to multi-disciplinary design team.
Tender Documents
  • Preparation of geotechnical investigation & monitoring plan drawings and geotechnical design drawings.
  • Preparation of Bill of Quantities.
  • Preparation of Project Specifications including:
  • Geotechnical investigation and monitoring
  • Groundwater control
  • Piling
  • Mechanically Stabilized Earth Wall (MSEW)
  • Earthworks
Preparation of Proposals
Preparation of geotechnical sections of proposals for detailed design of large scale infrastructure projects. These documents include preparation of investigation and monitoring plan, cost estimates for BoQ, and method statements for geotechnical investigation & monitoring and groundwater control. Tender Evaluation Evaluating methodologies for site investigation & monitoring, geophysical survey (utility investigation and detection of underground cavities), excavation technique and shoring system, earthworks, groundwater control and micro-tunneling, against Employer’s Requirements. Preparing geotechnical section of tender evaluation summary.

Construction Supervision Geotechnical Support to construction supervision team include:
  • Reviewing contractor’s submittals including geotechnical interpretative reports for confirmatory investigation, geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring reports, design of temporary works including dewatering system and shoring, method statements, materials submittals, quality control submittals, shop drawings, program of works and ITPs.
  • QA/QC for geotechnical related construction aspects.
  • Geotechnical support for excavation, deep excavations and earthworks.
  • Inspection of foundation strata.
  • Supervision and performance testing of piles.
  • Inspection of cut-slope and supervision of slope remediation work.
  • Responding to contractors' technical queries/ RFIs and preparation of Site Instructions related to geotechnical aspects.
Design Review
  • Reviewing and verification/certification of geotechnical design by others.
May function as discipline Project Engineer on medium to large projects, assuming responsibility for the work of the group. May plan, direct, and supervise the work of a major engineering unit or project requiring a largescale expenditure of manpower and financial investment. Leads other Engineers and design personnel in technical excellence and growth in the Quality Improvement Process.
Provides technical consultations for interdisciplinary analytical studies and analyses.
Ensures compliance of design with all applicable codes and regulations, providing the seal and signature of the professional engineer when required by statute or contract.
Conducts surveys, studies, and site investigations.
Maintains affiliation with professional societies to keep abreast of current technologies.
Helps determine budget estimates and staffing requirements for the defined scope and schedule. May assist with other administrative and technical duties.
Recommends and prepares technical papers.
Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering and 10+ years of experience in designing the geotechnical elements of large scale infrastructure projects with multi-national design consultants. Extensive experience in geotechnical design and construction supervision of shallow foundations and piles, embankments slopes and earthworks, and retaining structures.
  • Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering is highly preferred.
  • Experience in Soil-Structure interaction analysis using FEM for deformation and stress analysis of deep excavation support systems including Diaphragm wall, secant piles, sheet piles, ground anchors, steel struts, Wallers etc.
  • Experience in slope stability analysis and slope protection systems.
  • Experience in design and construction supervision of foundations (shallow and deep including piles and barrettes), embankment and earthworks.
  • Experience in groundwater control system including active and passive systems.
  • Experience in design and construction supervision of ground improvement works including Vibro floatation, Dynamic Compaction, Dynamic Replacement, grouting and Deep Soil mixing.
  • Experience in geotechnical design and construction supervision of tunnelling works including TBM and NATM tunnels and associated structures such as cross passages and audits.
  • Experience in planning, evaluation and interpretation of geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring regime for various geotechnical structures and earthworks.
  • Experience in performing impact assessment on the existing structures and utilities due to construction of tunnels and deep excavations.
  • Should be familiar with the Authority’s requirements including Q-Rail, Kahramaa and PWA related to the impact on their assets due to ground engineering works.
  • Should demonstrate experience and ability to perform Root Cause Analyses for various structure damages related to geotechnical engineering issues.
  • Ability to advise solutions to the clients on their geotechnical design problems.
  • Preparation of ground investigation proposals, tender evaluation, Geotechnical Interpretative Reports (GIR) and Geotechnical Design Reports (GDR).
  • Must be familiar with Qatar local design requirements and practices including Ashghal standards, Ashghal Interim Advice Notes, QCS and QHDM.
  • Must be familiar with International Codes and Standards including Eurocode, BS and AASHTO.
  • Proficiency in various geotechnical software packages such as Geostudio (Slope/Seep), WALLAP, LPILE, GROUP and Rock Ware. The proficiency in PLAXIS (2D & 3D) is highly desirable.
  • Qatar Professional Engineer registration (MMUP Registration) is mandatory, and other internationally recognized engineering registrations are highly desired.
  • International Publications on geotechnical engineering subjects will be additional benefit.
The candidate must be highly driven, goal-oriented individual with strong sense of responsibility, ownership and leadership. It is mandatory that the candidate is well versed in client relations, and possesses excellent communication skills with both internal and external parties. Very good command of spoken and written English language is mandatory. The candidate is expected to be highly proficient in technical writing skills in English language. Potential to perform in a lead capacity, and a familiarity of industry practices and regulations are required.
