Petrol/Diesel Mechanic
Overview: This mechanic focuses on diagnosing and repairing the engines and mechanical systems of light vehicles (cars, vans, SUVs with petrol/gasoline engines) and heavier vehicles (trucks, buses, generators with diesel engines).
Key Responsibilities:
- Engine Services: Perform tune-ups, engine diagnostics, and repairs on petrol and diesel engines.
- System Repairs: Service and repair braking systems, steering systems, suspension, exhaust systems, and cooling systems.
- Electrical Work: Troubleshoot and repair basic electrical systems, including starters, alternators, and batteries.
- Emissions Control: Understand and repair emissions control systems to ensure vehicles meet environmental standards.
- Customer Service: Communicate with vehicle owners to explain problems and recommend necessary repairs.
- Vocational training or certification in Automotive Service Technology.
- Proficiency with diagnostic scan tools and standard mechanic's tools.
- Knowledge of the key differences between petrol and diesel engine systems.
- Problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
