Job Description

Position Summary
The Mechanical Project Engineer will be responsible for the technical execution and coordination of mechanical engineering projects from conception through completion. This role requires a hands-on engineer with a strong foundation in mechanical design, project management principles, and a proven ability to manage timelines, budgets, and resources. The ideal candidate will be a proactive problem-solver, an effective communicator, and capable of working collaboratively in a cross-functional team environment.
Key Responsibilities
Project Management & Execution:

  • Manage multiple small to mid-scale mechanical projects simultaneously, ensuring they are delivered on time, within scope, and on budget.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project plans, schedules, and budgets using tools like MS Project, Excel, or other ERP/PM software.
  • Lead project kick-off, status, and design review meetings with internal teams, clients, vendors, and contractors.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks and issues, implementing effective solutions.
Technical Design & Engineering:
  • Perform engineering calculations for design, including stress analysis, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and tolerance stack-ups.
  • Create, review, and approve 2D/3D models, detailed drawings, schematics, and Bill of Materials (BOMs) using CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Inventor).
  • Specify materials, components, and equipment based on project requirements, industry standards, and cost constraints.
  • Conduct Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) reviews.
Procurement & Vendor Management:
  • Source and evaluate suppliers and subcontractors. Prepare and issue Requests for Quotation (RFQs).
  • Review and approve vendor drawings, technical proposals, and invoices.
  • Manage the procurement process to ensure timely delivery of parts and services.
Testing, Validation & Documentation:
  • Develop and execute test plans (FAT, SAT) to validate design performance and compliance with specifications and standards (e.g., ASME, ANSI, ISO).
  • Analyze test data and prepare comprehensive technical reports.
  • Create and maintain all project documentation, including design files, manuals, and as-built drawings.
Quality & Compliance:
  • Ensure all engineering activities and deliverables adhere to company quality procedures, industry codes, and client specifications.
  • Support root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for technical issues.
Communication & Collaboration:
  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for clients and stakeholders on assigned projects.
  • Collaborate effectively with electrical engineers, software developers, manufacturing personnel, and senior management.
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • Education: Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Experience: 4-5 years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering, with at least 2 years in a project engineering or project management role.
  • Technical Proficiency: Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks is highly desirable; AutoCAD, Inventor, or Creo are also relevant).
  • Project Management: Demonstrated experience with project management methodologies. Familiarity with PMP concepts is a plus.
  • Fabrication Knowledge: Strong understanding of manufacturing processes (machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, GD&T) and assembly.
  • Problem-Solving: Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a keen attention to detail.
  • Communication: Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information clearly.
  • Software: High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or E.I.T. certification on path to P.E.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or equivalent.
  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks Simulation).
  • Knowledge of Product Data Management (PDM) or Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
