Job Description

The Marine Operations Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of a fleet of vessels. This role involves daily coordination with vessel crews, shore-based teams, port authorities, and regulatory bodies to ensure that operations meet company standards and international maritime regulations. The superintendent plays a critical role in ensuring operational excellence, safety, and cost-effectiveness across marine activities.

Key Responsibilities:



Fleet Management & Vessel Operations:



Oversee the day-to-day operations of assigned vessels, ensuring smooth and efficient marine operations. Monitor vessel schedules, voyage planning, and performance to ensure timely arrivals, departures, and cargo handling. Provide operational support to vessel Masters and Chief Engineers as needed.

Safety, Compliance & Regulatory Oversight:



Ensure all vessels comply with IMO, ISM Code, MARPOL, SOLAS, flag state, and port state regulations. Conduct or coordinate internal audits, inspections, and safety drills. Lead investigations into incidents or near-misses and implement corrective/preventive measures.

Crew & Manning Support:



Liaise with the crewing department to ensure proper manning levels and crew qualifications. Support crew welfare, performance management, and training requirements. Provide guidance and resolve operational or personnel issues affecting the crew.

Port & Terminal Coordination:



Coordinate vessel operations with port authorities, terminals, pilots, and agents. Manage berthing, loading/unloading, bunkering, and other port-related activities.

Budgeting & Cost Control:



Monitor operational budgets for assigned vessels and identify opportunities for cost savings. Review and approve expenditures related to stores, spares, repairs, and bunkers. Track vessel performance metrics such as fuel efficiency, downtime, and turnaround times.

Technical & Maintenance Support:



Work closely with the technical superintendent or technical manager to schedule dry-dockings, repairs, and maintenance activities. Assist in planning preventive maintenance and ensuring minimal disruption to operations.

Qualifications:



Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, Maritime Studies, or a related field. Master Mariner (Unlimited) or Chief Engineer license preferred. 5+ years of seagoing experience, with at least 2 years in a senior officer role (Master or Chief Engineer). Prior experience in a marine superintendent or shore-based marine operations role preferred.

Key Skills:



Strong understanding of international maritime regulations and industry standards. Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Proficient in marine software systems and Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to make decisions under pressure and respond effectively to emergencies. Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.

Work Environment:



Primarily office-based with regular travel to vessels, shipyards, and ports as needed. Must be available for after-hours support in case of vessel emergencies or operational issues.
