Position Summary

The University Library employs part time staff to assist the Access Services Department in providing quality services to all library patrons. Part time staff play a critical role as members of the Access Services team in providing customer service of the highest quality to all our students, faculty and staff.

Part-time staff are scheduled to work at the Library Service Desk in accordance with operational needs throughout the semester, including late nights and weekends. They work directly with other full-time library staff and are expected, following adequate training and supervision, to possess a basic working knowledge of the library\'s circulation system WMS in order to check in / check out library owned resources and materials. Part time staff should also be familiar with the library website and be able to direct patrons to policies outlined therein.

Part time staff reports directly to the Access Services Supervisor on duty.

Job Responsibilities
  • Performs check-in, check-out, and renewal of books, DVDs, and other items using the library\'s management system (WMS). This includes materials that are currently housed in the reserve collection, kits/keys for presentation rooms, and associated peripherals, including lan wires, laptop chargers and stationery.
  • Assist patrons with checking in/out laptops using the self-service laptop kiosk.
  • Upon request, provides patrons with details of fines incurred and refers any queries or disputes regarding fines to the supervisor on duty.
  • Directs and refers patrons to the most appropriate point of library service for assistance as required (Librarians, Library IT team).
  • Assists patrons and answers queries regarding room reservations.
  • Assists full time staff in library rounds to maintain a quiet and orderly library environment and in accordance with the rounds schedule.
  • Continuously train student workers on Access Services policies and workflows.
  • Assists students in operational use of service technologies including scanners, photocopiers and self-checkout stations
  • Records lost and found items in the logbook.
  • Ensures the service desk area remains neat and orderly at all times by paying attention to:
  • Lan wires - tidying
  • Reserves - shelf reading
  • Holds shelf - in order
  • Kits - presentation, eraser and markers, laptop peripherals
  • Check markers - replace when needed
  • Performs others task that may by assigned by the Supervisor (e.g. special projects).
Qualifications and Skills Required
  • Bachelor\'s degree (BA/BS) from four-year college or university,
  • Two to three years of experience in a customer-facing role, or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrate computer competency including knowledge of Microsoft Windows and MS Office Suite.
  • Customer service experience
  • Able to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Able to write simple correspondence.
  • Able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Able to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • UAE Nationals are preferred.
