Offshore Laboratory Technician

Job responsibilities:

Carries out a defined set of standard laboratory tests in an offshore geotechnical laboratory by:

Generating and processing test data.

Drafting concept reports within time, budget, and quality requirements.

Maintaining and calibrating equipment.

Escalating complex tests to the Senior Lab Technician or Offshore Shift Engineer

Working with standard operating procedures.

Works with moderate supervision.

Key Result Area Sample management and preparation - Collect and prepare samples to be tested, register, test, store, and dispose of them in accordance with applicable standard laboratory quality procedures. Working Offshore - Work in an offshore geotechnical laboratory onboard a moving vessel for extended periods of time of up to three months at a time under the supervision of the shift geotechnical engineer conducting strength and classification testing and assisting in cleaning and assembling sampling equipment. Testing - Perform Laboratory Testing and produce test data on standard format worksheets in a precise and timely manner in accordance with standard procedure, and sign the worksheet at the completion of a test. Perform multiple chemical and physical test for soil and rock analysis that comply with the standard BS, ASTM, BSEN. Calculation and QC - Perform test data calculations, plot results and prepare test reports to be checked by a Senior Chemist or Laboratory Manager. Perform an independent check of test data worksheets and sign the worksheet as checked. Equipment maintenance - Before each test, ensure all required equipment is in good working order and calibrations are up to date; carry out routine maintenance as well as performance checks, when required. After a test, ensure equipment and tools are in good condition and if not ensure they receive proper attention and rectification; keep the superior informed and take appropriate actions. Perform general housekeeping duties in the laboratory. Assist the Lab Supervisor and/or Senior Lab Technician, and QA Engineer/Advisor with internal equipment verification and calibration. COSHH and HSSE - Familiar with COSHH and HSSE requirements. Ensure proper storage and handling of all chemicals, and ensure chemicals are used only within their period of validity; keep concerned persons informed about low or expiring stock well in time. Housekeeping - Perform general housekeeping duties in the chemical section of the laboratory. QHSSE Compliance - Ensure that Fugro policies and procedures are understood, implemented, and adhered to by all employees.

Diploma or Bachelors degree

Fluent in English

Ability to go offshore for extended periods of time (up to 3 months at a time)
