Job Description

A kitchen steward's primary duties are to

maintain cleanliness, hygiene, and organization in a kitchen. This includes washing dishes and utensils, cleaning equipment and food preparation areas, and managing waste. Stewards also assist chefs with basic tasks like ingredient preparation, help with inventory and supplies, and ensure compliance with all health, safety, and sanitation standards.

Core responsibilities



Cleaning and sanitation:


Wash, sanitize, and store all dishes, pots, pans, and kitchen utensils.

Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, floors, walls, and equipment, including ovens, hoods, and drains.

Maintain cleanliness in storage rooms, walk-in refrigerators, and other holding areas.

Waste and inventory management:


Properly dispose of kitchen waste and recyclables.

Monitor cleaning supplies, report shortages, and manage inventory.

Organize and store clean dishes and equipment in a safe and organized manner.

Assisting kitchen staff:


Support chefs and kitchen staff with various tasks as needed, such as light food preparation.

Operate dishwashing machines and other cleaning tools efficiently.

Compliance and safety:


Adhere to all health, safety, and sanitation regulations.

Follow proper handling and usage of all cleaning chemicals and equipment.

Report any maintenance issues or hazards to supervisors.

Ensure a clean and safe work environment for themselves and others.
