the problem. To design or redesign mechanical and thermal devices using analysis and
computer-aided design. To develop and test prototypes of devices they design. To analyze the test results and change the design as needed. To oversee the manufacturing process for the device. To design and oversee the manufacturing of many products ranging from medical
devices to new batteries. To design power-producing machines such as electric generators, internal
combustion engines, and steam and gas turbines as well as power-using machines,
such as refrigeration and air-conditioning systems. To design other machines inside buildings, such as elevators and escalators. To design material-handling systems, such as conveyor systems and automated
transfer stations. To use computers extensively as computers help mechanical engineers create and
analyze designs, run simulations and test how a machine is likely to work, and
generate specifications for parts. To read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, schematics, and computer-
generated reports. To implement operating procedures, resolve system malfunctions, and provide
technical information. To research and analyze customer design proposals, specifications, manuals, and
other data to evaluate the feasibility, cost, and maintenance requirements of
designs or applications. To specify system components or direct modification of products to ensure
conformance with engineering design and performance specifications. To research, design, evaluate, install, operate, and maintain mechanical products,
equipment, systems and processes to meet requirements, applying knowledge of
engineering principles. To investigate equipment failures and difficulties to diagnose faulty operation, and
to make recommendations to maintenance crew. To assist drafters in developing the structural design of products, using drafting tools or computer-assisted design/drafting equipment and software. To provide feedback to design engineers on customer problems and needs. To oversee installation, operation, maintenance, and repair to ensure that
machines and equipment are installed and functioning according to specifications. To conduct research that tests and analyzes the feasibility, design, operation and
performance of equipment, components and systems. To recommend design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions. To perform personnel functions, such as supervision of production workers,
technicians, technologists and other engineers, and design of evaluation programs. To establish and coordinate the maintenance and safety procedures, service
schedule, and supply of materials required to maintain machines and equipment
in the prescribed condition. To design test control apparatus and equipment and develop procedures for
testing products. To perform initial and ongoing design reviews To deliver documentation offering a critical analysis and suggestions for correcting
