All horse grooms employed by Al Maha will be held accountable to the below. Below list of accountabilities is a basic guideline of what is to be expected from a horse groom working at Al Maha. The management team reserves the right to add additional duties, should these be within reason.
  • Horses should be groomed as per the Weekly Work Schedule (Attached). Grooming will include using the curry comb, soft body brush, dandy brush, hoof pick and cleaning the face with a sponge or soft cloth.
  • Process of grooming the horses will be as follows:
  • Start with the curry comb in circular motions all over the body, except the face. Use the soft body brush next and go along the hair growth, all over the body except the face.
  • Next, use the dandy brush to brush out the mane and tail. The dandy brush is not to be used on the body.
  • Use a damp sponge or cloth to clean the face. Horses should not be sprayed in the face with the hose pipe.
  • Clean out the hooves with the hoof pick and pay close attention to the frog area. The frog area is very sensitive and great care should be taken while cleaning this area.
  • Every two weeks horses should be fully shampooed. This includes body, main and tail. If horses develop skin conditions, wash them more frequently or as per instruction from the Horse Vet. Ensure all shampoo has been rinsed off properly. Horses should be dried off with a towel after washing and shampooing.
  • When washing the horses, water should be first sprayed onto the legs and then onto the body. This will ensure that the horses get used to the temperature of the water and will also minimize the risk of tensing up the back muscles of the horse.
  • Clean the face using a damp sponge or cloth. Clean around nostrils, eyes and ears. Use the sweat scraper to remove excess water off the coat. Clean feet free of mud and dung.
  • Mucking out the stables should be done daily. Process as follows:
  • Horses must be left outside the box while the grooms clean inside the box. Grooms may not clean the box while the horse is still inside. Best is to do this activity when all the horses are outside in the paddocks.
  • Horse dung should not be left in the corner of the box for it to be removed later. It should be removed immediately when cleaning the box. Leaving the dung on the cement floor creates stains on the cement and leaves a foul smell in the stables which will attract insects and flies into the stables.
  • Shavings should be used sparingly when adding them to the stables. A thick enough layer should be provided to ensure no injuries are obtained by the horses when they are lying down in the stables. In winter the layer may be increased due to cold weather.
  • Old horses should be given blankets in winter, and blankets should be hung up, and not be left lying on the ground.
  • Clean feeding troughs and water buckets every day Water buckets should be cleaned outside in the washing area.
  • Apply basic first aid to horses when needed and as per the instruction of the Horse Vet and/or Senior Field Guide. Horses should be inspected daily for any new cuts, injuries, swelling, heat etc. Use medication as seen fit or seek advice. Any major issues like Colic or Lameness should be reported to the Senior Field Guide immediately.
  • Basic maintenance and cleaning around the stables and stables house. Check paddocks, gates, fix any loose wire, pick up any (and all) rubbish lying around, check water troughs and feeding troughs, hose pipes should be rolled up and be kept in a neat manner \xe2\x80\x93 They may not be left lying on the ground. Rubbish can be placed in a black rubbish bag and be driven away when the field guides pick up grooms for staff cafeteria runs.
  • Hay should be raked up and placed back in the feeding troughs. It may not be left lying on the ground in the paddocks.
  • Inside the stables: Cleaning of horse boxes, removing all spider webs, sweeping away of dirt and sand. Cleaning any horse droppings against the horse box.
  • Any major maintenance issue should be reported to the Senior Field Guide, who will inform the Engineering team.
  • Cleaning tack and fixing any broken tack. This should be done every Wednesday. Cleaning will include using leather food on all leather equipment, wiping/brushing of horse hair on saddles, saddle pads, girths etc. Saddle cloths and pads can be sent to the laundry to be washed.
  • Clean and maintain the medication room, tack room, guest waiting and shavings room. This includes but is not limited to sweeping out sand and dust, and cleaning cobwebs. Cleaning helmets, re-arranging chaps and cleaning the cupboards.
  • Check all medications expiry dates on the 31st of every month. Expired items should be discarded. Senior Field Guide should be informed should there be any medication needed.
