The Department of International Studies at American University of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) seeks to hire a full-time faculty member in the humanities or social sciences with a specialty in the history, culture, society and political economy of the Arabian Gulf. The position starts in mid-August 2024. This full-time position is open to applications from all ranks. The successful candidate will have a broad base of training in the disciplines of history, sociology and/or and political science with a focus on the UAE and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. Preference will be given to candidates who have expertise in the political economy of cultural activities in the Gulf, such as sports and heritage tourism. Candidates must be able to teach introductory classes in the history, culture and society of the UAE; Gulf history; Middle Eastern history; and global problems. The ability to teach women\'s history and upper-level courses in globalization is a plus.

Successful candidates must have a PhD in a relevant humanities or social science discipline focusing on the Gulf with a record of excellent teaching, a record of scholarship and an active research agenda. Candidates must be willing to relocate to the UAE by August 2024. All department members are expected to contribute to a range of faculty and student-oriented service activities. The regular teaching load is 3-3. AUS offers financial support for conference and research travel.
